Can anyone comment on the effectiveness of drying by heat vs. vacuum (with humidity control packs) ?

Vac bags with the silica packs do work, but they can only absorb so much. So at some point they become ineffective and need to be replaced (might be able to recharge them though). With a dryer like this, they are essentially a small heater, usually with a humidity sensor, and can greatly reduce moisture in filament. You can't remove all the moisture, as that will ruin the filament.

There are many factors that can also come into account. Live in a moist area, like near an ocean or a tropical climate, then you would always have problems with humidity. Live in a desert, not so much.

There is also the issue of what filament type one is using. They are all hygroscopic to some level, here is a basic rundown:
PLA, Nylon, PVA, TPU, ABS, PC, PETG - all essentially sponges. PLA and TPU might be the worse of the bunch. PLA will become brittle and start to break down if it absorbs too much moisture.
ASA, PA, HIPS - less prone to it, but will still absorb some (depending on environment).

If you aren't in an environment that has relatively high humidity, and aren't storing spools for extended periods of time, this dryer might be a bit overkill. If you are having issues with prints that are attributable to high moisture in the filament (popping, poor adhesion as an example), it would be worth the investment.

Silica in a vacuum bag will not pull moisture from the filament. Filament has to nearly reach glass transition temperature before it will release the moisture.

My understanding is that a good vacuum causes the water to boil at room temperature [google.com] and turn to vapor which is either sucked out by the vacuum pump or absorbed by the silica packs.

Are you saying the vapor can be absorbed by filament at room temperature but NOT sucked out?

Well, I guess I will find out, because I have a number of reels which were in plastic bags with silica, but are now in vacuum pulled plastic bags with silica.

I don't think you can get enough vacuum in a plastic bag to boil off moisture. You could technically use a vacuum chamber but I think it is still highly inefficient at room temperatures. CNC Kitchen did a video on it. https://www.cnckitchen.com/blog/c...0wv8yvv3rs
