If you don't print a lot. I'd strongly recommend not getting an inkjet printer. I learned that the hard way

It wastes ink keeping the ink head lubricated and ready to print.

I'd spend a little more and get a tank-style printer from Epson or Brother or HP (last choice) as they are much more economical to use.
The ink cartridges in these cheap printers contain very small amount of ink vs the tank style that last a year or two.

It really depends on your needs and budget. Some have a scanner/copier function and some don't. I know if you look at Costco and Sam's Club, they have models by Epson and Brother that includes extra FREE ink bottles that you don't get at BestBuy or Amazon. With the tank printers, it's a little more $$$ upfront but you can save a ton on ink by just filling the tanks with bottles instead of replacing the printheads every time with normal cartridges.

PLUS, printer manufacturers are now locking their printers to THEIR brand of ink cartridges, but tank printers, since you just use a bottle of ink, there is no way to control that, so you can buy cheaper ink and fill your tanks (but to be honest, OEM ink is pretty cheap and lasts a long time).

If possible, don't choose HP. They're a greedy, terrible company that was bricking their customers printers with a firmware update that if you didn't have genuine HP cartridges installed, your printer stopped working. They're always playing games to get you to pay for ink (their subscription service that caused the printer to stop printing if you didn't buy enough ink). I just no longer trust HP.

Or, it doesn't (in the case of my gigantic Brother MFC-J6955DW, which uses cartridges, instead of large bottles to fill reservoirs). So my print head is ruined and not worth replacing, leaving me with a gigantic, but very capable scanner. And no- I didn't let them run out of ink.

This one uses ink cartridges.

I have the Epson ET-3850, that uses bottles. The reservoirs are huge, and the replacement ink is affordable. I will never buy a cartridge-based inkjet printer again. I used to trust Brother.

i think epson makes you buy their expensive ink . Go with a brother laserjet printer then buy your ink cheap on ebay .

If you like buying expensive cartridges from Brother and having your print head clog anyway- follow this advice. I used and recommended Brother for about 25 years. This last printer from them will be my last. They have the nerve to brand it "InkVestment".

Or you can buy Epson and get large ink bottles that fill a reservoir. (And you can save money on the printer and the ink.) The Epson listed above uses cartridges, so probably a waste of money.

Do not get the tank style if you don't print much.

I had an Epson eco tank 2750 and it is permanently clogged in the black color despite power cleaning several times. Is getting recycled soon and am looking for a replacement

It's funny...I wonder if certain brands are prone to that because I've got a Canon Pixma Pro-100 Photo printer that I use only a few times a year to print pictures and it NEVER clogs on me.

Good to know:βœ… Best for Third-Party Ink & Consumer-Friendly Policies1. Brother " πŸ₯‡ Most Permissive & Affordable Long-TermThird-Party Ink Support: Excellent. Brother printers (especially older models and budget inkjets/laser models) tolerate generic cartridges with few to no lockouts.Firmware Behavior: Rarely blocks third-party cartridges.Running Cost: Low, especially with high-yield third-party toner/ink.Consumer Feedback: Generally praised for reliability and longevity.> " Example: Brother MFC-J1010DW or HL-L2350DW (laser) " cheap, reliable, and refills cost pennies per page.---2. Canon " πŸ₯ˆ Good Overall, Some CaveatsThird-Party Support: Moderate to good, depending on model.Firmware Updates: Canon has blocked third-party cartridges on some models, but usually not aggressively.Best Models: Older Canon Pixma models are 3rd-party friendly; newer MegaTank series (e.g., G6020) is refillable, no chips.Pros: High-quality prints, especially photos; decent refill options.> ' Tip: Canon MegaTank models (G-series) offer ink bottles, not cartridges " very low running cost.---3. Epson " Mixed (Good Models Exist, but Risky)Third-Party Support: Poor on cartridge-based models; decent on EcoTank models.Firmware Lockouts: Notoriously aggressive with chip blocks via updates.Good Option: Epson EcoTank series (e.g., ET-2850, ET-2800) " no cartridges, you pour ink into tanks. Compatible with third-party bottled ink if you avoid firmware updates.> Avoid most Epson WorkForce or Expression models if you want to use generic cartridges.---" Worst for Third-Party Ink / Anti-Consumer Practices4. HP " 🚩 Worst for Cost & LockoutsThird-Party Ink: Heavily restricted.Dynamic Security: HP uses firmware to permanently block 3rd-party cartridges. Newest models also require an internet connection and cloud verification to print (!).Subscription Trap: β€œHP Instant Ink is pushed aggressively"locks printer if subscription ends.Lawsuits: Sued multiple times for anticompetitive behavior.> Avoid HP unless you’re okay with high cartridge prices or using their own refill plans under strict conditions.--- ' Final Tip When shopping, look for:No chips required, No mandatory firmware updates, Non-subscription dependent models, Printer communities on Reddit (e.g., r/printers, r/budgetprinting) are great to verify long-term viability.
