Heads up, those 1500 minutes aren't per month, it's for the entire year. Works out to roughly 4.11 minutes of usage per day.

They usually only give you 1.5GB for the whole year..

According to my phone settings, I've only used a total of 8 hours 45 minutes (or 525 minutes) for the past 2 years. I'm guessing the reason it's even that high is due to customer service calls. I rarely use my phone for calls.

It's the data and text messages I find insufficient for my primary device. Not so much the outgoing SMS but rather the incoming SMS. I get way too many spam texts.

Price is good for a backup phone and service though.

4GB RAM. Hard pass.
The QVC Moto G 2025 deal is better. Similar specs but cheaper.

5 best budget smartphones of 2025, so far

3. Samsung Galaxy A16 5G — $199.99
If sub-$600 phones still feel too steep, Samsung's Galaxy A16 5G is the kind of under-$200 steal that proves you don't have to spend big for a solid Android experience. Sometimes going for even less on Amazon, the A16 5G punches way above its weight with smooth performance, decent cameras, and a long six-year support window — all for just $199. As PCMag's Iyaz Akhtar put it, it offers "a winning blend of performance, durability, and support," making it the best Android phone you can get at this price.

Is it possible to keep the phone and sell the yearly plan? Or is the plan attached to the phone?

Iirc, the cheaper Moto G 2025 has only 1-2 years OS updates, 64GB, 720p display instead of 1080p and LCD instead of OLED. I know one can add extra storage via microSD but having 128GB built-in gives more leeway. The price for the 128GB A16 5G and Moto G 2025 is the same so if going 128GB, the A16 is better specs-wise.

Cannot do that. The service will be activated automatically as soon as you turn on the phone. Plus, you will need the service to unlock the phone.

I agree this A16 has more storage and more future updates, but at $100 price point. I got the QVC Moto G deal for $33. That's a better deal imo but YMMV.

This is the correct answer. I got this phone through Straight Talk a few months ago (just as a phone to use for work) and it is impossibly slow. I haven't installed almost anything on it. It is so frustrating - most of the time I think it didn't pick up my typing or side button use - nope, just slow.
If I had paid anything more than 2 months of service on ST I would be really annoyed.

Looks like tracfone has now stopped combining the lines so you can no longer get the buckets added to your old plan that is your main line

Not a good deal. Last year around this time they offered A15 with unlimited talk and text plus 24GB of data.

bro for 2 months of service you could have got the moto g power - 2025 with 8GB RAM. It's my daily driver now from a previous ST deal when you only needed 1 month of service and it's smooth af. Too bad ST changed the requirement to 2 months now.
