Amazing practical deal.
I use the M12 surge all the time over an m18 impact. It's so small, handy, quiet, and provides all the torque you need around the house.
Plus the 3/8 ratchet is pretty useful too if you ever turn wrenches.

I use the M18 Surge a lot and got the M12 version thinking it's be smaller/lighter and it really didn't seem much different size or weight wise. The downsides were it seemed to turn on/off a lot less smoothly causing it to twist in my hand and also the grip was thicker due to the battery going inside. I returned the M12.

That's odd, I did the exact opposite, returned the M18 Surge and kept the M12 Surge. You may have received a bad M12 Surge, it happened to me with the M12 Insider and M12 Oscillating multi tool, both Fuel and both bad out of the box. The Insider had barely any torque, the replacement one is awesome, the Oscillating tool would not hold onto the blade, returned that, and just use the Dewalt instead.
The M12 Surge has been my most used 1/4" impact and it is smooth with usually more than enough power, if I need more, I grab the Dewalt 870 hydraulic instead. I am ready to sell my Milwaukee M18 Fuel 1/4" as I haven't used it in again since adding the M12 Surge and Dewalt 870.

I wish they'd put the surge in the drill driver combo deals.
That would probably get me to drop by Bosch 12v, but I just don't really need the ratchet. I've got m18 stuff and the combo charger so it would be nice to jump into m12 land.
