Ive been having some epic movie nights with mine since picking it up earlier this year. Such a badass screen and a pretty slim profile when wound up.
It has a physical triangle pattern to reflect light from the projector to the viewer, and absorb ambient light. There are a lot of variations, and some are better than others. So someone will probably correct my simplified answer.
The purpose is to improve contrast (or prevent washout) that has been a common complaint with traditional projectors and screen combinations.

I had placed mine in front of my old screen and used my old long-throw projector on it just to see what it would look like…
In the complete darkness its actually not bad!
