Google Voice is simply a free service where you have your own phone number that you give to everyone. It can run from a phone, tablet and/or computer. You can call and text from that number using only data, and nobody has any idea that it's not your actual phone. The "base number" is your cell phone's actual number that you wouldn't need to use at all, so it wouldn't matter if it changed.

I've done this for years because my employer provides me a cell phone but I wanted to keep my personal number separate. So I ported it to GV and have the best of both worlds using the same phone. If I leave this company, my GV number is unaffected. It also works great when in a foreign country because you only need a WiFi connection to use your GV service as if you were at home.

6-year mint customer here. I snagged this deal during the Xmas sale for a spare device. For my primary Mint number, I'm up for renewal next month. Can I port my main number to GV and use a random Mint number to forward to GV? I never tried that but I thought I saw a comment on a mint post last year about that working.

But when you call someone, your base number will show up right?

Or do you use GV app to call?
You can either default it to use Google Voice, or you can set it to let you choose each call you make.

FWIW I've used both Mint Mobile and USMobile side-by-side at the same time. The Mint Mobile experience was their 6 month plan for unlimited everything. And, USMobile was for a prepaid 1 year unlimited premium plan using either Darkstar or Lightspeed. When I needed to reach out for support, Mint Mobile was responsive and easy to work with while USMobile customer support seemed to be blunt, distant, and rough around the edges (as in, "why the F@#$ are you bothering us?!). For data, Mint Mobile was dependable wherever I used it which is not bad since I gather they are using the T-Mobile network. For data on USMobile is somewhat dependable but there were spots where it seemed to be slower than Mint. For hotspot, Mint was super smooth while USMobile was far more restrictive. They literally froze our account and made us "promise" to their compliance department (did not know they had one for "hotspotters") that we would not use it for hotspotting (what's the point of free data and hotspotting when you need it?!). For setup using the physical SIM (can't speak to eSIM), it was easiest with Mint while USMobile did take numerous tries. All in all, both are decent services but if you prefer AT&T over T-Mobile, then USMobile may be your "ideal" option. Since we understand the major carriers all have their pros and cons, we just go with switching back and forth when the right deal times itself right.

What happened to their claim that unlimited data is truly unlimited now?
Didn't they advertise that just a couple of months ago?
This is called throttle, it's always been the case for all carriers in the fine print.

Port your actual number to google voice. Next, sign up with Mint and get a "new-to-you" number (base number) assigned. You can choose whether to forward from GV to the base number, or just use the Mint service for data with the GV app for voice and text. When the promotion is over - just get another new-to-you number and repeat.
This offer requires port in, so you can't get a "new to you" number from mint. You'll need to buy one from Numberbarn or similar.

EDIT sorry this one doesn't look like they're requiring a port in, so it will work.

i thought mint was with verizon?
No. Mint has always used T-Mobile, and for the last year or so is now owned by T-Mobile.

Mint is QCI7, deprioritized behind Google Fi and T-Mobile postpaid.

So what about services that cannot use VoIP numbers for otp? I have had situation where some services won't send one time passcode to Google voice number.
