Google Voice is simply a free service where you have your own phone number that you give to everyone. It can run from a phone, tablet and/or computer. You can call and text from that number using only data, and nobody has any idea that it's not your actual phone. The "base number" is your cell phone's actual number that you wouldn't need to use at all, so it wouldn't matter if it changed.

I've done this for years because my employer provides me a cell phone but I wanted to keep my personal number separate. So I ported it to GV and have the best of both worlds using the same phone. If I leave this company, my GV number is unaffected. It also works great when in a foreign country because you only need a WiFi connection to use your GV service as if you were at home.

So what about services that cannot use VoIP numbers for otp? I have had situation where some services won't send one time passcode to Google voice number.
Correct. Not all services are compatible with GV numbers.

Just use a Google Voice number for everything, and the base phone number won't matter.
Okay so how do you get native text messages without Google voice? Services such as RCS and iMessage? Go a different provider until mint mobile comes out with new promotion. I believe mint mobile will let you port back with a new offer after 30 days. US mobile is my go to until a new promo is offered.

There's no RCS with G Voice yet. Maybe never.

Mint is a good carrier. They are using T-Mobile network. Amazing 5G coverage and speed up to 700Mbit. Got deal in December $180/12 months unlimited. Satisfied 100%.

The problem is they bait and switch. after promo your price will double, and the deals are never for existing customers only new ones. so at that point you gotta pay up or move on, which gets old.

After years of screwing around with Mint and Red Pocket I moved to visible and couldn't be happier. 30/month unlimited and price doesn't change. after yrs of mint/rp data caps it was a delight (now RP/Mint have copied and do unlimited data for a reasonable price too) AND unlimited hotspot is the best part (altho throttled to 10 mbps is the tradeoff, it's well worth it IMO!). When my home ISP goes out, which was often because I switched to a new to the area fiber company, it's not much of a problem I just use the visible hotspot till the outage is over. 10 mbps is plenty for my mostly websurfing needs and you can even online game on it.

Just know that if you pass that data threshold, the service is unusable. I did speed tests and it was as slow as modem speeds.I hit it last fall when I was streaming all our little league games (about 3-4 gb per game) ended up switching to Visible and never looked back
most people will not use above 35gb, Mint is just not for you

That is indeed one drawback that sometimes happens, but it's rare. I avoid using SMS for OTP, and prefer using an Authenticator app wherever possible because it's more secure anyway. It's up to you how you would want to handle something like that. For a company being that demanding for my actual cell phone number, I personally avoid their service if possible. Dunkin is like that, so I won't use their app. If it is something that I cannot do without, I did on rare occasion use my "base number" and have to update my account profile if it ever changes.

Be sure to activate within 45 days. I bought my mother in law a one year plan to help her out and ended up having it go to waste because of this. Soured me pretty well on Mint.

do you run into any issues for those phone number verification services? you used to not be able to use it for 2fa and sms verification but i think google voice works for everything now?
Some banks and financial services (Chase, Zelle for instance) don't allow VOIP numbers for SMS 2FA; you need to use either some of the authenticator apps, or a different approach (email, or call).

Agreed. Just want users to be aware of the hard 35gb limit.

How long might this promo remain active? I'm looking to switch, but still have another month on my current prepaid plan
You can purchase the plan now. They don't start your plan until you activate. You can do that in a month when your old plan expires.

That was before. The policy has changed.
Has anyone tested that? Nothing more frustrating then having an unusable phone for 2 weeks.
