The good news is, I bought replacement generic ink dirt cheap ($10 per a full set of 4), and it seems to work. But if it runs out as fast as the original ink, it would still be very expensive per page.
Bottom line: Buy it only if you print no more than a couple of pages per week. But then all inkjet printers are like that, no?

But as a general rule, inkjet isn't a great option for people that do a lot of printing due to the high cost of ink.

In theory staples will price match

However I think technically they shouldn't in this case due to the rewards...but it might be worth a try

Looked at this and my ink cost will skyrocket compared to how I currently refill $10 worth empty refillable cartridges I bought ages ago with dirt chip ink. Seems can't do that anymore with chip in cartridges. Best case scenario I'll need to invest $35 on refillable cartridges and $35 on chip resetter to get to where I am. So, $70 for printer and $70 for supplies will get you unlimited dirt chip printing.

It's very sad to see that they're chipping their OEM carts.

Which 3rd party brand worked?
I've only tried Yellow so far. I did report it as a non-genuine cartridge when I installed it, and the printer doesn't seem to mind (see the attached screenshot). As a side note, the page yield estimate which the Brother software is reporting on the genuine cartridges can be safely divided by 10. I don't know yet what the yield will be on the 3rd-party set.
