I've had this since Thanksgiving. I am happy with it overall, both printing and scanning. But the initial ink did not last AT ALL. I have already replaced yellow, and now the other three colors need to be replaced. I may have printed less than 50 pages, but I don't now how to check the count.

The good news is, I bought replacement generic ink dirt cheap ($10 per a full set of 4), and it seems to work. But if it runs out as fast as the original ink, it would still be very expensive per page.

Bottom line: Buy it only if you print no more than a couple of pages per week. But then all inkjet printers are like that, no?

FYI, nowadays ink cartridges that come with printers are lower capacity "starter" ink cartridges rather than full size. So your experience doesn't surprise me at all, very likely normal ink cartridges will last longer.

But as a general rule, inkjet isn't a great option for people that do a lot of printing due to the high cost of ink.

Staples has this printer for $79.99 with 30% back in Staples Rewards, so while you pay $10 more, you also get $24 back in Staples Reawrds dollars.

In theory staples will price match

However I think technically they shouldn't in this case due to the rewards...but it might be worth a try

We've known this for many decades now. But generic inks can save the day. Cheap to buy a printer and cheap to print. Just avoid getting a printer that requires the use of their original ink cartridges only.

Read the top and most recent reviews. Brother was my go-to because ink was cheap and plentiful on the secondary market. A new software update has borked that all up. I'm holding on to mld Brother KFC with both hands now!!

Love my old MFC-J430W that uses cheap generic ink. For the MFC-J1010DW some reviewers say you have to subscribe to Refresh EZ Print to use the included ink cartridges.

I love my J430W too. It's not printing clean anymore so I will need to replace it soon.
Looked at this and my ink cost will skyrocket compared to how I currently refill $10 worth empty refillable cartridges I bought ages ago with dirt chip ink. Seems can't do that anymore with chip in cartridges. Best case scenario I'll need to invest $35 on refillable cartridges and $35 on chip resetter to get to where I am. So, $70 for printer and $70 for supplies will get you unlimited dirt chip printing.

I'm on my 2nd MFC-J430W currently. The first one gave up the ghost after many years. Could not get the correct colors on printouts. Tried so many ways to fix it from every internet source possible, but nothing worked. I had another one in reserve. This one has maybe 5 years in service now.
It's very sad to see that they're chipping their OEM carts. EEK!

Which 3rd party brand worked?

Vintella. There was a double discount on it at the time, and I paid $7 for a full set. EEK! At that price, it was a no brainer to try.

I've only tried Yellow so far. I did report it as a non-genuine cartridge when I installed it, and the printer doesn't seem to mind (see the attached screenshot). As a side note, the page yield estimate which the Brother software is reporting on the genuine cartridges can be safely divided by 10. I don't know yet what the yield will be on the 3rd-party set.

I had a Brother for years and finally got rid of it. I only print anything of significance every other month or so, and was purchasing ink at least three times a year, which put my yearly ink costs nearly double the cost of the printer. Got a refurbished Epson Ecotank from Amazon and regret not doing it long ago. Almost a year in and still over 50% of the ink that came with the printer remaining (at least according to the window.)

What about the Epsons one where you refill the ink with a bottle, and cartridges stay within the printer? This seems like the best way, cartridges don't dry out?
