I'm a heavy user and the M1 8gb was my main computer for 4 years. These days, it's my secondary but I still use it when I don't want to bring my main M4 16gb 15". My m1 8gb hit the swap super heavy. I didn't feel a performance drop, but was worried at the amount of SSD wear it would do. 5 years later, my ssd still has 78% life remaining accord to the SMART data.
This M1 8gb won't be good for AI or heavy workloads, but is more than enough power for the average internet based user. At this price point, they only have premium chromebooks or crappy Windows laptops. I'd take my M1 8gb over any other if this was my price cap or giving it to a basic user.

If you can afford the difference, this sells for $599 brand new at Walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Apple-.../715596133

Not everyone has $850 to drop. Some people have a hard cap of $400 or $500, which would have kept them out of the MacBook market until today.

Would snag a mini M4 for a bit more vs this unless you really needed the laptop form factor
Shhh, don't mention spending more. There are people on here that'll SHAME you for suggesting such a thing. There are folks who are "on a budget!" How dare you suggest that buying something better might be a smarter (and a TCO cheaper) long-term move than getting refurbished (aka garage sale quality) e-waste without a warranty.

Shocking how inaccurate this statement is lol
as a user of an 8gb m1 and also an i9 with 64gb of ram… i usually choose the macbook unless im doing my 3d work. operationally for basic computing the mac performs better. blame intel, blame windows or whatever, but its the truth. i didnt believe it until i experienced it either, but quit with this crap in the thread.

I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or not lol

For complex 3D work, yeah of course 8gb isn't going to be enough compared to 64. The i9 (even though they throttled like crazy) would trounce the base M1 in that kind of workload. The M series is better than x86 platforms in most ways.

The point I was making is where BeigeRoute was regurgitating the nonsense Apple talking point where their memory compression (while MUCH better than Windows) is so good that 8gigs on M series Mac is the same as 16gigs on Intel, which is not true.

Yeah, but that it is better than MacOS is not correct. I would have let it go if you just said that Windows also had it but you had to include your empirical tidbit as well which means other will read and and be all the dumber for it. Is MacOS compression so good that it's the "8gigs equals 16gigs" bs that Apples peddles? No, of course not, but it's still considerably and, most importantly, MEASURABLY better than how Windows handles it. Windows memory compression is actually such dogshit half the time, that I have it disabled on my computers. But whatever helps you sleep at night, chief.
i genuinely want to see this benchmark, i havent been able to find one anywhere

Hard disagree. If you're traveling or working on a degree, you don't have time to wait for a 2012-era 8gb of ram to catch up with the work you need to get done.
i aint doing no work on my vacation they can fire me.

8gb of ram is the real detriment on this. It's 2025 -- 32gb is considered the bare minimum standard anymore. Such a paltry 8gb amount was the low end back in....what, 2013?

With casual admin use (email, discord, onenote, firefox), I'm hitting 65-70% on a 16gb M1 Air. You'll be slamming the swap memory -- or having to treat it like a mobile by single tasking. Just with that stuff alone, I'm occasionally hitting that swap memory like it owes me money.

You're better off looking at the entry-level M4 Air which routinely hits $850. Yes, it's more than twice the price -- but you're getting a CPU that is significantly better AND twice the ram (just in the base config). For $1000, you can get that same config in a 15" chassis. All with the option to get a spanking fresh 3-year warranty.

Say you're a PC guy without saying you're a PC guy.

Yes, because if I was a PC person, I'd be advocating a $850-1000 M4 Air?

Amazon has the Intel version refurb (same spec, silver) excellent condition for $330:https://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacB...78338&th=1and only $5 more for people that wants more memory with same CPU (16GB, Space Gray) for $335:https://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacB...78338&th=1
The intel macbooks are just flat out inferior to the M1 in every way. And that's besides the fact that the next OS update later this year, macOS Tahoe, is dropping support for these 2020 intel MBAs: https://www.macrumors.com/2025/06...ible-macs/
If you really want to a 2020 MBA, get the M1

You don't understand how ram works. If there's more RAM it will use more of it. If there's only 8 GB available, there would still be probably 20% headroom left running those same apps you're talking about

This is an absolutely comical take for anyone with education in system architecture. Lol. I am dying from laughing every time I read this.

That's....not how ram works, but hey, keep mansplaining things!

That's exactly how apple memory management works. not like android - use as much as available.
