I'm a heavy user and the M1 8gb was my main computer for 4 years. These days, it's my secondary but I still use it when I don't want to bring my main M4 16gb 15". My m1 8gb hit the swap super heavy. I didn't feel a performance drop, but was worried at the amount of SSD wear it would do. 5 years later, my ssd still has 78% life remaining accord to the SMART data.
This M1 8gb won't be good for AI or heavy workloads, but is more than enough power for the average internet based user. At this price point, they only have premium chromebooks or crappy Windows laptops. I'd take my M1 8gb over any other if this was my price cap or giving it to a basic user.

If you can afford the difference, this sells for $599 brand new at Walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Apple-.../715596133

Not everyone has $850 to drop. Some people have a hard cap of $400 or $500, which would have kept them out of the MacBook market until today.

I used this thread to find a 16gb/256 on eBay with a 1 year warranty for $352. https://ebay.us/m/7DrD3QI've been wanting one for a few years and at this price, it's not a huge dent in my wallet. Thanks OP!

For windows yes, But Mac can still run way better with 8GB of RAM. This is a good deal. For students, and anyone who needs mac for regular use.

Wow. I didn't realize apple users were that bad with math. 8gb is not the same as 16gb. In fact, it's 8gb more. See, if you use your fingers and count out eight....then count out another eight, you get sixteen.
Say you never used an M series Apple MacBook without saying it. Hey suit yourself. I was just sharing facts from a premier professional video editing and visual effects company from Blackmagic design. I guess their engineers don't know what they are talking about. Oh and by the way. Look at many other professional tools out there and you will see the Mac vs pc requirements and when it mentions Apple silicon chips the minimum and recommended memory on Apple is always HALF of what windows specs are. Have a good night. Just sharing some information.

You mean professional are editing video on their production workstations with 8gb of ram? Please be serious.

Then why'd Apple change the base ram to 16gb if 8gb is more than enough? Please, backpedal that for me.

Someone so ignorant about tech and business really shouldn't be recommending people's purchases publicly, I would just say that. As for your question Google is great for seeking really obvious info.

Everyone crapping on this post is forgetting. This is a base model MacBook Air m1.... I can't even begin to tell you how many of these, with dents, scratches, probably peed on, are selling on Craigslist and Facebook market place for 500-600$. 😂 🤦 So at the end of the day, MacBooks some how hold their value which boggles my mind. But there's a use for this computer and for the average joe it's plenty good. For me, I would need 16gb of ram and 512gb storage minimum and the 15" screen. But good luck finding that for 400$ 😂 let alone under 1000$ 😔

very good price for the phonetop, they used to have intel but now it has a phone chip so its not a real computer anymore, but at this price its good, i think i will buy it

Being honest you don't know how m chip architecture is a real revolution. Let alone power consumption it is superior to Intel chip any and everyday.

Whats wrong with that. A machanic that build Toyota car does not mean he is less professional that building a US or Euro car

8gb of ram is the real detriment on this. It's 2025 -- 32gb is considered the bare minimum standard anymore. Such a paltry 8gb amount was the low end back in....what, 2013?

With casual admin use (email, discord, onenote, firefox), I'm hitting 65-70% on a 16gb M1 Air. You'll be slamming the swap memory -- or having to treat it like a mobile by single tasking. Just with that stuff alone, I'm occasionally hitting that swap memory like it owes me money.

You're better off looking at the entry-level M4 Air which routinely hits $850. Yes, it's more than twice the price -- but you're getting a CPU that is significantly better AND twice the ram (just in the base config). For $1000, you can get that same config in a 15" chassis. All with the option to get a spanking fresh 3-year warranty.
With LM Studio running a model, raid running in the background, librewolf having been open for days, discord running, etc. and I'm floating ~12gb of usage but really it's closer to 8gb of real usage if you ignore the compressed memory and I never touch the swap. This is on a M1 mac mini. If I got rid of raid and lm studio/pinokio I could easily live within 8gb.

It's a value at a $1000 -- just look at the quality of Windows machine you get for a grand, and it makes any Apple shine.
