It's 8gb of ram in 2025. Safe to say it's a piece of ewaste, even more so given it's a "refurb".

Direct from Apple refurb? Probably going to be fine. Refurb from anyone else? Garage sale item with a spit-shine....maybe more spit than shine.

And you're arguing against communicating with your offspring and their school to find out the right tool they need? Please be serious.
You'r trying to preach to people you know nothing about on a topic you know very little about. You might be a great parent, but this is the wrong place.

This is a way worse value considering there's newer M series MacBooks showing up for 700$ with 16gb memory
I was looking for my comment to reply, but you saved me some time...M4 MacBook Air for $699 and no tax! https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/t/18467503 If the M1 Air still has 5 years left, this M4 has 8-10. Also, it's several generations of improvements and more sufficient memory in base model -16GB.

Jiminy Christmas all the bias here is insane. a brief Google search shows a history of news articles about problems with the 8 gb M1 absolutely thrashing SSDs for mem swap bringing about the early death of some of these devices. Love Apple or not you have to accept the reality that the same laptop with 16 gb of memory may not be significantly faster but will likely remain functional significantly longer than the eight gig version.
I'll let my wife know her M1 is going to one day die on her. Can you tell me when? It's been 4 years but I gotta prepare her!!!!

Stack Social is a boiler room operation run by scammers. Fortunately I only got burned on a pre-paid cellular sim card that was worthless. After they were caught lying they just dug themselves in deeper. My strong advice is don't accept delivery and start a charge back right away.

I have this exact model that I purchased from Best Buy for $750 a few years ago (around 2020/2021). The screen flickers, and a local repair shop quoted me $400 to replace the whole screenβ€”when it likely just needs a new ribbon cable. At that price, I'm considering just buying this one again instead of repairing the old one.

You keep harping on "educated" like it's some sort of insult.

It isn't.

There are many both educated and uneducated people in this world. Their schooling doesn't diminish what they have to say. Please stop being unkind to others.

Then be prepared to endure hitting that swap memory like it's a Marine finding a vintage box of crayons after a long deployment.
This is wildly overstated.

Nah, not really. A family member has a 16gb Macbook Air, and that swap memory gets hit like it owes money. I was against them getting a 16gb machine back in 2022, but it was the largest amount of ram you could cram into that entry-level M1 machine.

I haven't had a Mac since the early 2010's. Is the Air model upgradable? I would want to add more ram.
Yes it is.

Go ahead and buy this now while its on sale. and when you have the time and money you can always upgrade it later on.

You can also upgrade the SSD storage too.
