I'm a heavy user and the M1 8gb was my main computer for 4 years. These days, it's my secondary but I still use it when I don't want to bring my main M4 16gb 15". My m1 8gb hit the swap super heavy. I didn't feel a performance drop, but was worried at the amount of SSD wear it would do. 5 years later, my ssd still has 78% life remaining accord to the SMART data.
This M1 8gb won't be good for AI or heavy workloads, but is more than enough power for the average internet based user. At this price point, they only have premium chromebooks or crappy Windows laptops. I'd take my M1 8gb over any other if this was my price cap or giving it to a basic user.

If you can afford the difference, this sells for $599 brand new at Walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Apple-.../715596133

Not everyone has $850 to drop. Some people have a hard cap of $400 or $500, which would have kept them out of the MacBook market until today.

Nah, not really. A family member has a 16gb Macbook Air, and that swap memory gets hit like it owes money. I was against them getting a 16gb machine back in 2022, but it was the largest amount of ram you could cram into that entry-level M1 machine.
I have 0 swap used. I don't even see it used

I would be ashamed of my parents if they got me this for college. Here's a pro-tip for life: communicate. You need to have a conversation with your goblin offspring once in a while. Find out what they like. What they need. What the school suggests they get. But to give them a nearly 5 year old garage sale used Mac with underperforming specs -- that would be insulting. And even worse if their college is Windows institution.Invest in your child's future through their education. But if you're just first realizing this as you're shipping them off to college, I fear it might be too little, too late.

Yes it is.

Go ahead and buy this now while its on sale. and when you have the time and money you can always upgrade it later on.

You can also upgrade the SSD storage too.
It's not at all upgradable. M1/M2/M3/M4 chips are all-in-one processor/RAM/storage chips and are soldered to the motherboard. The only way to "upgrade" the storage is with an external drive. Additionally, this is going to be the first M series MacBook to be dropped from an OS upgrade. It will run Sequoia, and should run Tahoe, but that might be the last OS upgrade it will work with.

That said, I have this exact MacBook Air (bought new in 2020) and it's perfectly fine for any normal light use - emails, documents, surfing, etc.

People here debating the specs... but let's be honest, if you're in the market for this... you don't need high specs; you're just buying the Apple brand name to launch Google Chrome to browse social media and watch YouTube videos! There is the truth!!! And there's more... this is equivalent to having a new, pretty girlfriend who has been around the block. Not worth it! Vote down if you agree! Checkmate!!!!

PurpleBorder .. most of the people who comment on things negatively, are rarely informed and parrot blurt marketing nonsense as if everyone uses a computer the exact same way. They are tiring, so hopefully you're able to ignore the dunce hats in the crowd. - Signed, a technical 3d developer.

That is typically the case if you don't actually do much on your machine.

8gb of ram is the real detriment on this. It's 2025 -- 32gb is considered the bare minimum standard anymore. Such a paltry 8gb amount was the low end back in....what, 2013?With casual admin use (email, discord, onenote, firefox), I'm hitting 65-70% on a 16gb M1 Air. You'll be slamming the swap memory -- or having to treat it like a mobile by single tasking. Just with that stuff alone, I'm occasionally hitting that swap memory like it owes me money. You're better off looking at the entry-level M4 Air which routinely hits $850. Yes, it's more than twice the price -- but you're getting a CPU that is significantly better AND twice the ram (just in the base config). For $1000, you can get that same config in a 15" chassis. All with the option to get a spanking fresh 3-year warranty.
32GB the standard on a Mac?? What are you editing Marvel movies in 4K or something?

It actually is upgradeable.

I've watched videos of people upgrading them. There's a shop in Canada that upgrades the RAM and SSD's on M-series Mac's

I never said it was EASILY or beginner USER DIY upgradable.

But it you have the tools and some experience, yes totally possible. Just a quick google search and youtube videos away from upgrading really. (also risk bricking the mac LOL)

You can also turn a DeLorean into a time machine. However, recommending someone buy a refurbished $400.00 5 year old M1 MacBook Air and assuring them they can upgrade it later is about as likely to happen. It is what is it, a capable web surfer and email machine that they should expect to get 3-4 years of use out of, period.

I didn't know we are living in fantasy island.

I still believe in count chocula and the easter bunny. Big Foot stole my luck charms as well.
