I'm a heavy user and the M1 8gb was my main computer for 4 years. These days, it's my secondary but I still use it when I don't want to bring my main M4 16gb 15". My m1 8gb hit the swap super heavy. I didn't feel a performance drop, but was worried at the amount of SSD wear it would do. 5 years later, my ssd still has 78% life remaining accord to the SMART data.
This M1 8gb won't be good for AI or heavy workloads, but is more than enough power for the average internet based user. At this price point, they only have premium chromebooks or crappy Windows laptops. I'd take my M1 8gb over any other if this was my price cap or giving it to a basic user.

If you can afford the difference, this sells for $599 brand new at Walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Apple-.../715596133

Not everyone has $850 to drop. Some people have a hard cap of $400 or $500, which would have kept them out of the MacBook market until today.

Hi, I can order this same computer from Amazon with a 90 day return policy for about $20 less and is "refurbished excellent" but only has 128GB storage. I'm not worried about spending the extra $20, but what I am concerned about is the return policy. From what I understand, Stacksocial can be difficult to deal with in regards to returns, where I've had success returning a defective laptop (even out of the 90 day return period) with Amazon. FWIW, it's for a 12 year old who will use it mostly for youtube, Roblox, and surfing the internet... What are your thoughts? Is this too much of a gamble based on StackSocial's return policy or should I just go for it because of the extra storage? Thanks!

I bought this and mine arrived last night (13". 8GB, 256 GB). Battery was at 89%. It passed diagnostics and I was able to install the last operating system. It is not a "Grade A refurb". There's a little nick of the aluminum taken out of a corner that must have come from a severe fall. It's small and superficial, but it is definitely visible from more than 2 feet. Also the bottom has some scuffs. This is for my kid who needs something right now, and this is something that seems completely functional, so I'll be keeping it. I don't see how this is better than getting an Amazon Renewed one at about $380 though. Among the options others have suggested, I am not at all tempted by a Chromebook where it is difficult to install software and the trackpads are usually much, much worse. While this M1 might be technically upgradeable, I don't think anyone should buy this counting on doing it. If you want more RAM or memory, spend more now and get a different machine. This M1 does almost everything fast enough, has an all-day battery and is likely to get security updates till at least through 2029, which works out to a pretty low per-year cost of ownership. In sum, I got a used machine. What I received does not seem to be a "refurb" aside from a new USB-C cable.
Hi, do you have a link to one on Amazon that has 256GB storage and costs around $380? The one I'm looking at only has 128GB but I've had good look with Amazon Renewed and have successfully returned a Macbook that died after the 90 day return policy, etc., and am I bit skeptical about stacksocial.. Thanks!

Grade A refurbished = "...at least 80% battery capacity...". If 100% is 18 hours, as Apple claims, then this is still good for over 14 hours.
No you are not getting 14 hours from it. You would not get 18 if it was brand new. I have one of these with near perfect battery health. Most are aware those battry numbers are extremel. It does have very good vbattery life but screen brightness and other factors will impact.

Your point is quite obvious.

It is no secret that businesses often advertise their products using test results achieved under lab conditions.

I have yet to encounter an electronics product (computer, tablet, power bank, car, etc.) whose projected battery life is actually achieved or exceeded in real life.

That's why I used the "IF" statement to relate to the actual battery life span.

Received my order today. Item clearly has signs of use including scratches - I wouldn't call this Grade A refurbished by any means. Unfortunately, apart from cosmetic issues, the display seems to be having a problem as it is flickering every 3 seconds. Going to process a return.

Oops, you're right. The Amazon one I was looking at is 128 GB. The 256 is $440.

That's bad news, mine is arriving tomorrow. If it's not as described I'm returning mine. Thinking back this is a suspicious deal, is it some random seller or stacksocial themselves that sells these macbooks?

You don't understand how ram works. If there's more RAM it will use more of it. If there's only 8 GB available, there would still be probably 20% headroom left running those same apps you're talking about
This is such a lie! 🤣

I should also add that I have experienced excellent battery life in relation to health on all the M series macbook airs and pros that I have been buying. Even a few yrs later. I dont have anything in the 80s at all. From what I can remmeber most were in the 90s or higher. It is great on battery life. If the cosmetic condition is good on this its a great deal at $600. Its a use case situation.

8gb of ram is the real detriment on this. It's 2025 -- 32gb is considered the bare minimum standard anymore. Such a paltry 8gb amount was the low end back in....what, 2013?

With casual admin use (email, discord, onenote, firefox), I'm hitting 65-70% on a 16gb M1 Air. You'll be slamming the swap memory -- or having to treat it like a mobile by single tasking. Just with that stuff alone, I'm occasionally hitting that swap memory like it owes me money.

You're better off looking at the entry-level M4 Air which routinely hits $850. Yes, it's more than twice the price -- but you're getting a CPU that is significantly better AND twice the ram (just in the base config). For $1000, you can get that same config in a 15" chassis. All with the option to get a spanking fresh 3-year warranty.
What on earth are you rendering to need 32GB RAM as the minimum for an M series Mac? That is legitimately insane tbh

Looks like SS themselves. I can't find any seller name in my receipts.

I got mine yesterday and it has dents on the top and scratches/dents on all four bottom corner (looks like asphalt wear). They tried to send a replacement but I asked to do a return. Fingers crossed it isn't a fight

Interesting. Would be cool to buy 10 of these for 4k and cluster them together and see how well it runs some larger AI models.

Sorry to hear some are getting beat up macbook air. I just got mine today and its in mint condition. I cannot find a scratch, corners are clean, screen is like new, bottom of the macbook looks brand new. Battery health is 94%. I want to point out that I got the 128 gb. Maybe they have a lot of the 128 gb in stock and gave me the best one. It came in a generic box with very thin bubble wraps and a new power adapter and cable.
