I really don't understand why someone would spend money on a premium air purifier to then just use off brand, knockoff filters.

The filters are what makes an air purifier's value worthwhile vs subpar or inadequate, so I wouldn't use knockoffs for them

I get your point. Supposedly, the genuine filers are preferred. The aftermarket ones might be inferior in quality. If you search on wirecutter's review, they thoroughly tested and recommended two aftermarket brands to be at 95% or better when comparing to the OEM, and the aftermarket ones are significantly cheaper than the OEM filter. Under you are facing some severe medical concerns, aftermarket ones can be effective.

Thanks for the respectful and informative reply. I didn't know Wirecutter had tested after market filters and found a couple of brands that have comparable effectiveness. In that case, I'd definitely buy those two tested aftermarket brands.

But given they only found two brands out of the many different aftermarket options, I'd say that *in general* aftermarkets are sacrificing effectiveness for cost savings

Google says:

So yes, I was correct. It appears companies that aren't Chinese can manufacturer products in China, for cost savings maybe? Imagine that! Maybe go read an 8th grade social studies book and come back to the discussion with a more interesting factoid.

So do you typically call Apple products "Chinese junk" too?

I'm talking about the newer filter that has a mesh with pellets of activated carbon in them: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07W4FJYB2

That's the only OEM filter worth buying, because there is no 3rd party one available.

There is a 3rd party option.

TY for the info you've shared.

I've read a couple Wirecutter reviews, but didn't come across the one you mentioned concerning the two aftermarket brands. Could you please point me in that review's direction?
TIA

Yes. You're going to have to dig deeper in your whataboutism bag.

I think in the case of inferior filter (if true), the air purifier can make it up by higher air recirculation rate unless the filtration efficiency of the after market filter is significantly lower (e.g., filter does not fit leaving a gap) and/or there is significant particulate matter source in the room. The Coway 200M use ~5W at low setting so the electricity cost is rather minimal.

Be wary of the OEM. The smell is terrible.
