Easiest way is to put the dead battery into the charger next to a working one as you would normally to charge them. Connect the + side of the batteries with a thin wire (paperclip will work if it's thin enough). Tricks the charger into thinking it has the voltage of the one next to it. I keep a short thin wire in my box of batteries and chargers just for this.

If the batteries are completely drained, a smart charger will not be able to charge them. Put them into a dumb charger for 15 min, to bring them back up to a minimum level of charge, then put them in the smart charger again. I've had this happen a few times, and it always works for me. A "dumb charger" is a charger than charges batteries with no regard for the actual battery level and instead uses an internal timer to know when to turn itself off.

There is only one factory in Japan, but that doesn't make all batteries that come from it "the same". Some might be straight up rebranded, but often people report slight differences suggesting some are older gens or are cells that don't meet the higher QC standards for someone like Eneloop, but are still plenty good. Ultimately if it's made in Japan, it's made in the one factory and you can trace it to a manufacturing facility that has standards.

Chinese cells might be fine, but you're way more likely to run into issues and who knows where those were made, with what, by whom and what their standards are. Does this mean all Chinese cells are crap? No. Does it mean all Japanese cells will be perfect? Also no. But what it does mean is Japanese cells on average tend to be far more reliable and consistent because they all come from the same place.

My Eneloop and Made in Japan Energizer and Duracells are all going strong after many years. My IKEA LADDAs are from Japan as well and they're newer, but so far so good. I know IKEA has had Chinese cells before so it's possible they swap from time to time (Energizer and Duracell also change manufacturing countries without changing the packaging, so you always have to check). But last I knew IKEA were back to Japan and use gray wrappers and have slightly increased capacity over the previous Chinese made gen that I think were brown wrappers.

Eneloops maintain around1.2v whereas non rechargeables start at 1.5v and drop slowly as they discharge. Some devices work with a wider variance of voltage and some need closer to 1.5v.

I was originally planning to get the batteries from IKEA as I was told they were the same as Panasonic, but I have heard they switched manufacturers so I ended up buying Panasonic. I only bought AA, I do need AAA but use them so infrequently that I have tons of disposables still laying around. I saw a lot of good reviews on this charger, hope it's good:https://a.co/d/4qoCnLo

Nimh batteries are slightly lower voltage than normal alkaline. Like 1.2v vs 1.5v. It ususally doesn't matter but some electronics can be pickier depending on how they engineered their power circuitry.

Yeah it's a voltage issue. Rechargeable Ni-MH don't put out 1.5v. Most devices don't need 1.5v so it's not a big deal but occasionally some do just to start. Alkaline batteries start at 1.5v and lose it over time. Lithium batteries start at 1.5V and maintain it until they die. My Blink cameras are so sensitive to voltage that they won't run on rechargeables and will 'die' when an alkaline battery is at like 80% capacity. That's why they require lithium batteries. For those and those alone I got a set of rechargeable lithiums that work great.

if you don't have a "dumb" charger, you can also take a healthy charged battery and put it minus to minus and closed the connection with a pair of metal tongs for about 10 secs. this will juice the dead battery enough to put in a charger to detect. Also if a battery doesn't charge very much, try doing a refresh if your charger has that feature. it basically drains the battery and charges it a few times.

Eneloop (Panasonic) are the best rechargeable batteries you can buy. I've some still going strong after 10 years. I have never had one go bad.
