I don't understand how these work. Where is the address? You have to register or to your address and your name to use? Very confusing.
there is nothing to be confused about, you register it to your own address and spend on utility, amazon like retail sites or certain card can be added to apple wallet/paypal as well. so its upto you how you spend. e.g. i have to reach $5k in 3 months for chase preferred cc. I can buy these keep the money aside for later use rather than spending something which i dont need

Go back and read OP's FAQ's.

Why would these be beneficial for utilities over a normal cc or check card? Genuinely curious. Do you these count towards staples rewards or something? Otherwise it just seems like you are converting $200 for $200, but in a less secure form.

How safe are these prepaid cards? I don't want to deal with the hassle of finding out there is zero balance after some time.

How to convert these back to cash in bank account though?
Process a credit card purchase to yourself.
Eg Square account, enter card info, amount. The transaction amount will show up in your Square account, which you can deposit into your bank. You'll be charged their processing fees.

Utilities are about the only way I've found left to empty these over the past year as blackhawk keeps restricting these are retail places for purchases which previously accepted these for years.
Can you register these to an address so that if you were using it online where a merchant has ZIP Code verification these can be used?

How is this even beneficial to consistently do? Do you get insane bonus or CB at Staples? Seems like a big win to hit a CC spend or something but if you are already dropping 1,500 a month, none of those should be a problem.

There are a good amount of 2% cards on everything so even if you get 5%, going to a store to buy, activating all cards, then using all the cards does not seem worth the $30 per 1K and your cash is tied up in cards. 100% think I am missing something here.

It's probably user error, but I've never had any luck using these online outside of Amazon.
i had to register each card that i wanted to use online otherwise transaction wouldn't go through I'm guessing because of the zipcode

People ask about why others purchase and use these pre paid cards....whats the benefit? They are mostly doing it to get airline miles or hit some kind of reward spending point on a credit card without paying the fee for the debit card. Its totally legit, but as other have said, if you put these in a sock drawer and forget them - they do expire and you are SOL. I've tried to convert them to cash thru paypal or the other site, but they block that now. Too much fraud. You can, but you do not have to, register these on the site shown on the back of the card. That links your card to a specific zip code and lets you use it at some stores that ask for the zip associated with the card. usually you do not have to do that. If I want to burn thru a few quickly, some utilities allow you to pay more than you owe. I think t-mobile is like that. billi might be $120, but I can pay $400 just to use a couple of cards and then run a negative balance for awhile.

I still have good luck using the Visa cards to pay utilities. I was referring to having problems with the Mastercard versions, which seems strange as you think they would essentially be the same thing.

I pay all of my utilities and insurance with these cards. With insurance, I make a last payment with a bank credit card, even a small amount, and remove the prepaid cards as payment methods once used. The reason for this is that if you receive any sort of refund or rebate from your insurance company, it may be processed to the last payment method, and if it's a prepaid card, you may have issues.

10 years ago you could use these cards for just about everything. A couple of years back Kroger stores blocked these cards from any purchase including a gift card (Amazon, Starbucks, etc.). They were most valuable for use with recurring subscriptions, but most companies no longer accept them

Not sure why you got the thumbs down. You answered my question. Thanks Smilie I missed the OP. Sounds like the primary purpose is to meet minimum spend for new credit cards and/or cards that have 5% rewards on office supply stores. Seems like a lot of work but for those willing to do the effort, I say good on you!

Can't speak to the safety of them, but whenever I get a gift card cc as a gift, I always buy a virtual amazon gc for the full amount and send to myself, then immediately apply it to my amazon account balance. I've never had an issue doing this. Not sure, but guessing you might be able to do the same at walmart/target/retail-store-of-your-choice-with-branded gift cards. It's an easy way to use the full balance and keep it in a somewhat protected digital island without fees or expirations (at least, the amazon route, not sure about the other retailers.)

Then you're paying taxes on business income.

I've purchased 100's of these Visa gift cards but earlier this year, after buying and using one card at a few merchants, it suddenly locked up. This was within an hour after I purchased the card. I called Blackhawk, the company that issues these cards and the representative said that the card is registered to someone else! I sent over proof of purchase, my Id, card photos, etc. and after 3 months, they mailed me another card with the balance. Yes there is risk with these cards so you have to weigh the risk vs rewards.
