That's about what I paid for this thing 30 years ago. I know inflation is a thing but how on earth does this calculator still cost this much money?

I think at this point it might be the only "approved" calculator for AP Calc tests, or something like that. There's really no reason they shouldn't be like $30 new by now.

That being said, you can get them on ebay for about $50. People use them a year (or semester) and sell them.

This is actually the newer version. It's a lot faster than the old TI 84's and has color. It's also thinner and rechargeable.

It's been a long time but how much faster are we talking. The old ones didn't really take much time to output results or graphs.

Thinner? Maybe, but didn't look significant different. Rechargable batteries arent exactly state of the art either.

I think my point is more that I seriously doubt that the functionality of the calculator has so dramatically improved over the years to warrant this device still being as expensive as it is, despite any physical upgrades it might have

You didn't have a TI-84 30 years ago, and certainly not this version of it. Maybe you had the TI-85? The TI-84 Plus (there was no non-Plus version) was originally released in 2004 and this particular model was released in 2021. Now, the CPU used is more or less the same, although clocked at 3X the speed of the TI-83 or TI-85 calculators.

I'm not defending the monopoly TI has or the prices, but as you mentioned inflation, if you paid $100 30 years ago for a similar calculator, that's more than $200 now, adjusting for inflation. So this calculator is like you paying $45 - $50 30 years ago. This means they have effectively become much cheaper than they used to be. Should they be cheaper? Work on breaking the monopoly and they will get cheaper. Or, just buy used. There are many excellent options out there, especially after a school year ends.

I remember 30 years ago when I was picking out a graphing calculator I ended up getting a Casio instead of a TI because it was color. It was also in the $70 range at the time and approved for all the same tests as the TI.
