That's about what I paid for this thing 30 years ago. I know inflation is a thing but how on earth does this calculator still cost this much money?

I think at this point it might be the only "approved" calculator for AP Calc tests, or something like that. There's really no reason they shouldn't be like $30 new by now.

That being said, you can get them on ebay for about $50. People use them a year (or semester) and sell them.

Could be wrong but think it's a monopoly with textbooks and standardized tests

You didn't have a TI-84 30 years ago, and certainly not this version of it. Maybe you had the TI-85? The TI-84 Plus (there was no non-Plus version) was originally released in 2004 and this particular model was released in 2021. Now, the CPU used is more or less the same, although clocked at 3X the speed of the TI-83 or TI-85 calculators.I'm not defending the monopoly TI has or the prices, but as you mentioned inflation, if you paid $100 30 years ago for a similar calculator, that's more than $200 now, adjusting for inflation. So this calculator is like you paying $45 - $50 30 years ago. This means they have effectively become much cheaper than they used to be.
What's funny is I ended up getting a test approved CASIO instead of a TI nearly 30 years ago because it had a 4 color screen and I found it for $70-something at the time.

Got a couple of Coral ones for $30 each at Walmart clearance back in 2019 from this slickdeal. One of them was put for good use and the other one is ready to be used soon.https://slickdeals.net/e/12837877-texas-instruments-ti-84-plus-ce-graphing-calculator-coral-30-walmart-ymmv?v=1&src=SiteSearch&prop=&attrsrc=Surprised the price has been steady. Either supply/demand or just no real competitor.
High school math teacher here . There are competitors but teachers in the classroom teach using this model . If you buy a competitor you need to figure out how to use it on your own . In fact one of the competitors gave out $100 gift cards and. Free calculator to encourage teachers to use their product and add teacher landing page for children to order . For each calculator order through the landing page other incentive were given . All my lessons included how to using the Ti-84 . Would be hours and hours of work to switch to another platform . Ti has degraded the teaching experience in recent years charging for use of their pc based presentation software .

It's been a long time but how much faster are we talking. The old ones didn't really take much time to output results or graphs.Thinner? Maybe, but didn't look significant different. Rechargable batteries arent exactly state of the art either.I think my point is more that I seriously doubt that the functionality of the calculator has so dramatically improved over the years to warrant this device still being as expensive as it is, despite any physical upgrades it might have
A few seconds faster than Ti-84 silver edition and a few more seconds faster the the ti calculators of 30 year old model . This is especially true when shading systems . The old models are ancient in comparison to these newer models that run similar software . In addition the built in apps are better and they can store much more apps . Switch out the ce for the model students got from their older brother for major exams . Are they worth. $100 . No way they are way over priced . The monopoly will be breaking soon as more and more school districts move to computer based exams. . Unfortunately in my state the calculators have been on screen ti emulators

Texas Instruments has the market cornered in this dept. Need crunch some #s for calc, trig, or geom? Ti is there for you in abundance of targeted marketing & incentives to school systems. Casio? Whats that?

I ordered one two weeks ago on amazon for 125 without python and went to Amazon this morning to cancel it. During the cancellation I told it that I found it cheaper at Walmart. It then offered me $27 credit to keep it. Never seen that happen before.

I was one of the few to have a TI-92+ and that thing back in the day was a complete beast. Teachers let me use it cause it was approved model line up but it was the highest tier at the time. I had a games like Doom and Duke nukem on it, lol. Not to mention it could solve equations really easily, way before we had the power of the cellphone and apps to do it for us.

If you are taking AP math courses there is no getting around needing one of these as a cellphone is not approved method in most classes, which is why the price has been fixed for these types of devices for decades.

I had something similar happen about a week ago when I went to return an unopened mattress because it was cheaper on Prime Day. Amazon offered me the $20 difference right before the last page of confirming the return if I chose to keep it instead. Seems like they're testing a roundabout way of price matching without calling it that.

A little piece of me died when I bought this calculator for my kid a few years ago. Back in the day, the three biggest brands were to, HP, and Casio. Most engineers, accountants, and anyone else that frequently used calculators would use HP, but most high schools used ti because ti offered good discounts.bbthose kids graduated and became the new professionals and that killed of hp. But ti probably isn't doing so hot now that there are phone apps

Forget the Gold standard. We should adopt the T.I. standard. Think about it, a huge underground bunker full of nothing but TI-84 calculators.

Get the Casio FX 9750giii or whatever the equivalent Casio is. It's around 40-50 dollars and better than this.Edit:Im a calculator enthusiast and these are overpriced. Not my fault you're a lazy teacher or you can't use google to figure out how to do basic plotting for school. The best calculator would be the HP Prime G2 which isn't much more than this one.

Do they still use that ancient usb charging port? Bought one 2 years ago for my kid, and.... good luck finding a cable to charge it. Sure, I think it came with one, but geez...
