This is a mini split without heat. I've purchased and recommended at least a dozen over the past few years. Uses very little energy

You are right. 90% HOAs do not allow these window ACs. Crazy rules! HOAs are just scam organizations set up for making money and put up rules that are way overboard.

What's up with the big recall on these? I have had three get moldy and I'd need to hear they fixed the root cause before I'd get another.

Is this good to supplement a central AC system? I think this might be good for those who have a bedroom that doesn't get cold enough even with central AC in AZ (probably because temp is based on living room). Would reduce load on central AC, even keep it at higher temp and sleep with cooler temp in a single room?

This is a mini split without heat. I've purchased and recommended at least a dozen over the past few years. Uses very little energy

Yes am planning to use it in my 4th Floor townhouse to supplement my central ac unit as it is too hot in top floor

I had the same issue in AZ. One room upstairs was 15 degrees hotter than the rest of the house. I used a portable, but a window AC like this would be perfect. Just make sure your HOA doesn't get butthurt about the unit sticking out (if you have HOA). Either that or the Midea Duo portable 14k Inverter is incredible too, but it runs about 600

Like many window AC units, they splashed condensate water on the condenser coils to increase heat transference and increase efficiency. But unlike many other such AC units, they did not provide the option of opening a drain hole on the bottom outside corner of the back-tilted machine to offer the option of not using that water and draining it out. Big mistake = risk of mold. Now they come with plugs that intended to allow draining.

So yeah these had a big recall on them. If you somehow happen to get the non-updated version, you can just drill a few small holes where the water pools. Very easy.Also if you get the non-updated version, you would be eligible for having a tech come fix it or get a new one sent to you.All that was happening is the water pooled with no way out and turned the inside into a mold factory.The units themselves are excellent air conditioners and great superior window fit design.

Updated ones come with a different drain plug you need to replace yourself on the ac before installing. Box will have 3-4 so extra if you already have units.

You can also do the recall and they will send you the new plugs to swap out yourself.

They just changed the drain plug to drip a bit and added a tiny level item to make sure the installation tilts outwards. Same kit you get when you file a recall claim. Or you can wait forever and get money back on your existing one.

DO NOT BUY MIDEA U SHAPED AC UNITS!

The "updated" model is the old model, with a drain and some extra plugs. It also includes a nice disclaimer (that I'm assuming most of you didn't read,) which clearly states "This unit MUST BE CLEANED EVERY TWO WEEKS." Yes, every two weeks you need to take the unit OUT OF THE WINDOW to properly clean it per the manual. It takes about 45 minutes to clean it (not counting the removal/reinstall time.)

The "updated" model will grow mold, same as the old unit. The water pooling in the interior side of the unit has NOT BEEN FIXED. The water gets trapped inside the front of the unit, and DOES NOT DRAIN OUTSIDE. This is by design.

Do yourself a favor and stay far away from this headache and mold infestation.

BTW - I had two units recalled, opted for cash (they paid me $380 per unit) - I used the e-gift cards to purchase two "Updated" models. The FIRST thing you see when you open the new units is the giant legal disclaimer saying "Clean me and you cant sue us." I returned both units and picked up some GE Clearview units (they work well, but are pricey.)

And the recalled model also has quality issue, mine stops cooling after 2 years. While my other GE window air conditioner still cooling after 6 years
