I never understood the point of these. Just put in a regular recessed fixture and a BR30 Hue bulb which you can easily replace. If this goes bad, you have to buy a whole new fixture and reinstall instead of simply replacing a bulb. I guess it's useful if you have limited space above your ceiling. Am I missing something?

all depends on space. if you already have a wafer light existing you can't do what you are saying. yes, if you have full can then absolutely just buy the bulb

you've got a good point re: just replacing a light bulb in a can if one (or more) were to go bad, but in my particular case, i had the following:
  • for about a third of my house where i want to install these, there's very limited space above my ceiling (so i can't fit a can)
  • the flipper who we bought the house from already installed "dumb" 6" pancake potlights already, so these were overall a pretty easy in-place swap
  • perhaps most important point: what if you want to install a recessed light into a spot on your ceiling right where there's a ceiling joist running through? that's not a problem with these flat potlights

Not missing anything would agree, useful for limited overhead spaces or if you hate the look of a recessed light and bulb. Personally, I qualify for both!

I used one of these to add a light to my shower. Works great and didn't need to worry about a can.

IMO, a bulb in a housing looks so dated compared to a one piece. I'd never spend $40 on a single replacement but the difference in look is worth the premium to me.

I have used retrofit before which is fine but I don't think anyone is uninstalling existing cans to put these in.

Replacing already existing slim / pancake down lights. Many newer houses have little clearances between floors. I also prefer them over bulb / recessed as they aren't as bright/reflective. It's also more dusting up in there too.

Great price. This is what I paid for white only in 2018

Best down lights ever. And I install down lights all the time.

Not really sold on the color much. That seems silly

I recently had my garage renovated with an attic so i can store more stuff. My contractor suggested getting these since we used plywood over the ceiling insulation so we could easily slide stuff around. These were used since we didn't want traditional ceiling lights with cans that would stick out past the plywood. In my living room however, i had canned down lights and i replaced those with philips hue non slim ones since i don't care if they stuck out in the attic.
