Buy three GamePass Core one-year codes and redeem them to your US-based Xbox account. You can do this on console by going to the Microsoft Store, or via web browser by going to microsoft.com/redeem.
After that, head to https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-g...s/ultimate and hit Join Now. The three years of time you've banked of Core will convert to 18 months of GPU.
You can also convert to GPU automatically if you redeem a US-region code for GPU after you redeem the three Core codes, and typically secondhand sites are the best places to go for one-month codes that run about $10 each, but those codes have a small chance of not working. If you want something foolproof, just convert to Ultimate by signing up via the Xbox site or through your console itself.

I don't think I need/want ultimate at this point, but it might be nice if new games are added.
