Here is PSRef for this model.

For those asking about Thunderbolt - that's not included on these entry level gaming laptops (same with USB4). For those commenting on "i5? Gross!" - this is an HX CPU - will have plenty of power. This is essentially a desktop i5. My opinion on regular U-class is that i7 (now Ultra 7) means less - usually an extra big cache and 100MHz or so (with HX, you may get more cores). But with 2 SSD and 2 SoDIMM slots (some are used), there are expansion options. Great price - if I didn't already have a dozen laptops here...

Are these laptops good for lugging around for college and work?

16 inch is too heavy 4-5lb with power cord

Get a 14 inch under 3 lb. I like the Acer Swift series, Asus S 14. Aspire you can find at Costco.

$700 258v 32gb 1tb 24 hr battery. Light Gamer 60fps
$700 155h 16gb 1tb 4050 (Gpu is 2x-4x) 14 hr battery. Gamer 90-120 fps

Do you have links or model numbers? I can't seem to find the exact ones you're talking about.

At this point, how much does processor matter since they're all so fast? Honest question.
Would this be a good mid-tier gaming laptop for an 11-year old?

In this price range, this CPU is great in terms of power. The main downside to this class of CPU is the power usage when you go to battery mode. This would be a fantastic gaming laptop for an adult on a budget, much less a preteen. The Legion LOQ also has good build quality which matters a lot when we are talking about kids lol. Probably the only negatives on this is it is using a single 16 GB ram chip, and .5 TB SSD but this laptop is easily upgraded.

As long as it's MOSTLY a "portable within range of power" then this laptop is fantastic. Probably only going to get like 3-4 hours on battery for just general web browsing and the like. But in terms of gaming, general use etc this thing is a beast in it's price range.

Also to answer your question on "what can integrated graphics play these days?" a lot more than they used to, some of the newest iGPUs are comparable in games to a 4070/5060. But they also don't come in sub several thousand dollar systems lol.

Very helpful. Thank you! I ordered this one and I'm going to return the refurbished Acer. Acer is a disaster and refuses to do anything except offer me a refund. They won't even ship me another unit at the "Prime Day" price.

Wow that's gross. From what I saw (not your specific Acer), Acer's build quality is mediocre to bad. $3000 dollar 5000 series Predator Helios at Microcenter the screen was so flimsy it bent over half an inch when opening it from the center which is a first for me lol.

Oh one other piece of advice, main thing that kills laptops, especially gaming ones is heat. Make sure they know to use a firm surface under it like a lapdesk or something, don't just sit it on a bed or blanket and cook it lol. And every 18-24 months depending on animals/shedding humans get someone to clean out the fans. Do that and it should easily last them well into high school.

I think the only reason I didn't get it before was due to the single USB C port. I always do a triple monitor setup with a hub so I want a free port.
I have had several laptops, this was the only company that had a fan go out after a few months of consistent use. Not sure if that's just bad luck or be quality issues.

I think it probably depends on whether you absolutely need a laptop for some bit of gaming. A 15.6" at 5.25 lbs (and don't forget the power brick) is going to be pretty hefty to lug around for school and work in my opinion. A 3 lb 14" thin laptop would be more to my liking for school and work. If budget wasn't an issue, I'd get an ultra portable for school/work and desktop for gaming.
If by "college" you meant gaming then yes

it seems if you buy ACers cheapest junktops, they give poor support for cheapstakes like 4050 gaming laptop $450 or $100 atom netbook chromebooks. as if theirs a tier system like other companies.

i got $700 i7-13th 4060 from Acer ebay , Acer support was excellent when there was a power supply issue. Condition of laptop was like new- under 10 cycles on battery.

If this had Thunderbolt or USB4 I'd be all over it. As it stands, pass.
Why would that matter for a super cheap discount gaming laptop?

Because Thunderbolt/USB4 are useful? There have been laptops with similar/identical specs available at a similar price with Thunderbolt/USB4. They come up every few weeks. I'm willing to wait for the right one.
Staples recently had an ASUS TUF A15 with nearly identical specs that had USB4, for $20 cheaper and 10% back in points, but the thing was really ugly so I passed on that as well.

Can anyone answer this question? How does this laptop compare to Lenovo Legion Go as personal computer? Legion Go is basically portable PC and was just wondering how it compare to this laptop in terms of CPU and GPU. Thanks in advance for your insight!
