They are only "free" in that there's no return fee. You have to pay for shipping both ways if you return.

I have this, bought it in 1998, left handed too. Nice mellow sound. Wish it had a cutout.

Hard to buy a martin without playing it first. I'd be in if it was an 00 or 000 though.

Nope. Not if there's something wrong with it. Could be as simple as "doesn't sound good" or "doesn't play well."

I have returned a guitar to them because I didn't like how it sounded. They didn't question the return.

Have Martins become more consistent compared to the past, or has the variation actually increased?

On the used market, you'd be lucky to find one truly solid Martin out of every ten. It's rare to come across one that actually feels worth buying.
