Based on reviews it's probably this price for a reason. Looks pretty mixed between the set appears good quality and those that actually use it. I was considering grabbing just to be able to chase the occasional round out of cross thread but will likely skip it.

I bought a Century Tools tap and die set for 3 times this amount and it came in handy rethreading some running board threads that were so rusted out. The process requires some patience and precision to retread but it's pretty much straight forward and at the end, it's so rewarding if done right. For this price, its a great deal, considering that buying just one tap can be as much as $10 each. Don't forget to get thread chasing and cutting oil so you don't damage the taps and dies.

Thank you for posting that! After reading reviews on Northern Tools the biggest problem seems to the the ratcheting mechanism breaking. After this people are complaining about the case not holding all the pieces in place. The dies themselves seems to be very good quality but IMO if the ratcheting mechanism breaks that is of no good.

minus the ratchet (as some reviews have mentioned it's not great), the tap and dies are definitely worth this price alone.

I can't speak to this set, but my Klutch impact sockets were incredibly cheap for no skips and a decent case and they have held up really well. This might not be a great set for constant use, but for occasional use it's probably just fine. Klutch stuff seems to be at least HF/Pittsburgh level.

"hardened alloy steel" is not going to hold up to much abuse. Ideal use case for these is for cleaning or chasing existing threads and tapping into soft materials like aluminum. This will not hold up to much use in steel.

What are considered "punch above their weight", yet priced reasonably enough for an over achieving DIYer?
Have a few nice taps and dies, so know there are good ones out there…
Is there a set people think is good enough to deal with higher grades of material, and easy have access to cost effective single replacements to look at?

I personally do not like ratchet taps. I guess they are fine when you're just cleaning out existing threads but I tap a lot of holes in fairly thick steel and cast iron. I find I break a LOT less taps when using a ridged handle and can back off a little after every quarter turn. Actually in cast iron it would likely be fine.

If I'm tapping something 1/4 inch or thinner I just put a spiral tap in a drill and send it.

That said, I'm still buying this deal. Decent price for back ups. Course I typically only use about 6 different sizes of taps. But I do need the odd ball every now and then.

Every time I do… I'm missing the size I need in the older sets I have.
