This is a good deal for a current gen processor...and yet paying $390 over current base deal for an additional 8 gb ram and 256gb storage somehow doesn't feel good (edit: and 2 gpu cores)

Agreed - it looks almost like they are using the base deal to get your attention and then sucker you in for 50% more - this is almost bait and switch for the performance-oriented user😀
