A traditional setup will be better. Soundbars are useful for rooms you don't want to have a speaker setup in. Home theater? Speakers. Living room that you use for multiple things, including watching TV? Sound bar.

I bought this soundbar the last time it dropped to $700 and recommend it at this price. My toddler loves going after wires and outlets to test us and these are mostly wireless but great sounding surround speakers.

if you have a Samsung phone open the Samsung wallet and open a checking account with the Sofi money. I think just requires transferring a few dollars to it, but once you get it done it will allow you Samsung Savings Program similar to epp

I HIGHLY doubt that one can do better for same price.
For $700, to allocate $$ for decent Dolby Atmos capable receiver, one will have to sacrifice too much on speakers and vice versa.

Yes if you want to pay $700 now and never upgrade, then you are probably best off getting a soundbar. However, most people that 1. Care about atmos, 2. Have $700 to burn on audio equipment are going to care about improvements and upgrades in the future. Buy a good AVR and reasonable speakers now, save money, build on it layer. Buy this soundbar now and have no ability to build on it.

I'd further argue that most people will not place things correctly to notice the atmos. Even more people won't even have atmos capable media.

Well you could if you went OB/refurb/used.

You also wouldn't need a Dolby Atmos setup.
A 5.1 will easily outperform this soundbar in quality.

You're not actually getting a true Atmos immersion on a soundbar, it's simulated.
It's more a selling point than a true representation.

how does this compare to putting $700 into a traditional receiver and a 5.1/7.1 setup?
In this price range, the soundbar is better. Any relevant AVR will alone set you back 300-400 at the absolute least. Another 300 or more for any respectable bookshelves.

That's true you can never get true Atmos unless you have speakers in the ceiling but Q990D is a pretty good compromise with four upfiring speakers so if your ceiling is low enough the sound can bounce off the ceiling and reflect back down and provide an Atmos effect. I've owned a number of HT systems and the Q990D is more immersive than a low end 5.1 system.

Having setup many many systems I would disagree, it's not a comparison.

Even upfiring Atmos modules speakers are not ideal in a traditional setup.
On a soundbar they are minute woofers, physics tells you they can't produce the same sound.

It's just a technical simulation, not actually immersive sound.
If you have actually heard a proper setup, it's painfully obvious.

I can tell you with $700 I could definitely put together a decent used 5.1 that would be a more accurate immersive surround than this soundbar.

Let's not forget what content a soundbar is often used for, it's pretty inferior quality.

Why are you arguing that upfiring speakers are not ideal for Atmos when that's exactly what I said? Anyway, these are for people that want a smaller footprint so a debate on Q990 vs a traditional HT system is pretty much irrelevant. You are trying to push HT systems on people in this thread who don't want them. I have a traditional Atmos system in one room and the Q990 in my office. I absolutely love the Q990. It's a shockingly good soundbar system.

I'm not pushing anything.
I'm just pointing out that you can't debate the very thing YOU said is an irrelevant debate!

You agree upfiring(Atmos) speakers are not ideal but on a Atmos soundbar they are somehow a pretty good compromise!
You go on to say this Atmos soundbar is more immersive than a traditional HT system!

This silly irrelevant debate always shows up!

Ultimately it comes down to a simple question.
The importance of quality, if it's high/highest then you go traditional.
Keep in mind it comes with work to get it.

If it's not or the work is too much trouble, a good alternative is a soundbar.
Especially if you stream most of the time.
A traditional setup does not fix that content.

Soundbars are generally for people that want a smaller footprint and are usually not very good performers, but the Q990 is an exception.

No debating that, that's a personal opinion/choice between soundbars.

UPS just delivered this thing & it sounds fantastic!! 1st thing I did was go into smart things app & disabled automatic updates, cause I don't want Samsung bricking my new purchase & having deal with them replacing the mobo. Don't know why they would release a firmware update, without testing it first. Looks like someone gonna get fired in their IT dept 🤣

I ordered this and UPS left it out in the rain

The box was full of water and the soundbar was all wet.

Annoying because it was put on the porch partially - half the box under the porch, the other half sticking out into the elements.
Called Samsung and they sent me another one without any hassle! Great customer service.

The replacement sounds amazing and was easy to connect to my LG 77" G3 (which I got a slickdeal on last year!)

how does this compare to the Q990F system?

That one is $1,000 at the moment, is it worth it to spend $300 more for the F version?
The F gives you smaller form factor subwoofer if floor space is concern, but the freq response is about same.
