I love Nishiki rice but I've never heard that the Nishiki makes bicycle also!

Old 80s Japanese import for road bikes. Someone much more knowledgeable can comment on what's happened to the name since then.

It's a Dick's brand now. Not so highly regarded. The $700 original price is laughable, but $300 is good considering the components. People complaining of gear slipping is a little worrying.

For example a Specialized Rockhopper is $475 right now and likely a better bike with Shimano components, though very similarly specced. It's nearly 3.5 lbs lighter, which will feel nicer to carry around.

Decent bike for $300, the biggest issue for many is 2x8 but it may not be a big deal

Almost every review at DSG says it was incentivized.

The Ozark Trail Ridge is a much more modern and upgradeable bike for $100 more if you can swing it. The Giordano Intrepid is another option that's been on sale recently for I think as little as $200-$300 but hard to say if those will come back in stock.

That Specialized is honestly not completely offensive for the price - at least it has hydraulic brakes - but man, what a missed opportunity to not give it a basic 1x drivetrain.

The SR/Suntour XCT30 Fork and microshift are decent stuff. Frame is a bit heavy, but if you are rolling on paved roads and flat trails, this would be fun. The fork is used on bikes that run 3x this price. Basic, but decent for the price.

I used to manage a bike shop (about 25 years ago).

Nishiki was owned by Raleigh Bicycle back then...not sure if that is still the case.

edit: It was Raleigh, which is really under the Giant Bicycle company.

But as someone said above, it's now licensed to Dicks, so the quality probably isn't the same anymore.
