It is, there are kits. It will void the warranty and you should at least be somewhat comfortable being gentle and taking apart something that doesn't make it easy for you to take it apart. There's a great video here describing the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJC73hm3VM4

Just wanted to chime in; it might not be relevant to everyone here, but Costco Visa no longer has extended warranty, so if you want to go beyond the two years, youll have to use a different card. It is generally one extra year for most of the visas, but (ironically), alot of other citi cards give you two extra years!

All companies are the same... DENIAL when it comes to warranties... they try not to pay, just like the insurance companies. I use HP cause it is a large pc maker. Point is... you change the hard drive yourself, you will most likely void the warranty.
No, you will not void the warranty. So read the iFixit guide and don't break anything; it's not a difficult process. If you're that afraid of it, find a technical person who can help / handle it for you. But do know that opening a computer, "even" one that says "Warranty void if sticker removed", will not void warranty. That is illegal under USA law per Magnuson Moss.

256 GB hard drive... WHAT A JOKE. They are selling mini pc's with 1TB for less then $150. M4... GREAT, but come on... 256GB??? AND I bet there will be dozens of apple nerds who will state 256 is enough for most people and I say BULLSHIT.
256gb is completely dependent on the user. I need more storage in my laptop, so I got more storage in my laptop. But my wife doesn't and 256gb is plenty for her (she only uses just shy of 100gb).

There are much better ways to store files than on an internal drive, but i'm sure you already knew that.

You are correct. But if you dont use a VISA Citibank card order it online which will allow you to use a Mastercard.

it's more than being comfortable.... it's quite involved and only should be done if you are both an avid hobbyist AND willing to go through several attempts over hours to get it right, while risking damage.
I've only done a little amount of computer work. Yes, I've put together a couple computers and upgraded RAM in laptops but I don't repair computers or electronics for a living.
Upgrading the SSD in my Mac Mini took 15 minutes from start to finish, not counting the time to restore the OS. That part took longer but that's just computer time and not the person doing anything.
I wouldn't recommend someone do this if they've never opened a computer case before or never installed an OS, but it was very straightforward and painless of a process.

I have an iMac 2013 heading towards end of life. What screen are you all pairing your mac mini's with ? (anything comparable to my 27inch current iMac screen?)

I use this for coding and light video production projects. the ram and hard drive space has quickly become an issue with this computer.

What are the pros and cons of using this as a plex server vs. a $3-500 mini windows PC?

🤮 Is this the one where you have to flip it over to turn it on? like the magic mouse where you gotta flip it over to charge? Unnovation at it's finest.
If you 3D print you can try this hack: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6826809
I just have to tap the corner lightly to turn it on and it improves cooling as well.

Is the ssd changeable?
It is easier to buy a nas, plug it to the same network and mount it on mac mini.
Cheaper too, avoids voiding warranty and risk of bricking the PC.

These are two very specific examples/use cases where you should avoid a $500 computer.
It's a great note for anyone else looking to do those things (basically "Look elsewhere, because bottlenecks") ...but anyone who wants a desktop solution that's more powerful than a Macbook Air and works for basic work/gaming/media PC type tasks should consider this a complete steal Smilie

There should be no problem if you shut down every day or ten times a day. This is RIDICULOUS.
I think the point they're trying to make is that you're asking if it can do something that most people don't need it to do. I've been using various Mac minis as remote work computers for years now. My current one is mounted to the bottom of my desk, next to the cable tray. It's a pain to get to the power button but I don't really care because it never gets powered off.

Just put it into sleep mode and reboot in the morning if you want to pretend it was powered off.
