The solar is actually much simpler than it seems
Here's the most basic setup.
You need something to collect the sun's energy. That's your solar panel.
You need something to store the collected energy for use now or later. That's a battery.
Then you need something that can safely take the energy from the solar panels and convert it to a voltage safe for your battery. That's the charge controller.
Then you need a way to get the energy out of the battery to your appliance or device. That's the inverter. It converts DC energy from the battery into alternating current at the correct voltage.
These little solar panels are good for charging power stations or your own DIY battery storage things. Let's say you're a car camping person. You might have a power station like an ecoflow or some diy option doing the same thing. You use it for a laptop, coffee maker, hot water kettle, lighting or induction cooktop. But you need to charge that battery. This panel will let you do that.
The other scenario: you live in a place prone to disasters. Like fires, hurricanes, earthquakes or ice storms. You don't always need power, but you might to keep devices charged, run a radio, TV, lights, or something. In that case, you would charge the battery from the wall when the weather watch happened, and if it gets bad you'll use the battery and solar panel in conjunction to power things and recharge the battery. If you had to shelter in place, you might like having a gas-free, generator free way to have some limited lighting or a fan.
The final use that *might* have a shorter payback would be if your power company has time of use where some hours of the day are really expensive. If you had a suitable battery and inverter to where you could power a heat pump or window AC unit for that 4-6 hour window, while charging the battery at the cheap times or in the sun, it might work out okay.
You'd need maybe 8-12 years before the payback on a large scale solar system would breakeven. This type of system will never breakeven.

- There is quite a bit of electrical work necessary to tie solar in with your existing home electrical + city power grid in a compliant way, often involving permitting, sub-sub panels, and smart inverter systems to go from AC to DC
- Solar still takes about a decade to break even cost-wise depending on your cost of electricity, e.g. at 30c/kWh (my cheapest rate in socal), a solar panel generating 150 watts on average during 6 hours of good daylight gets you ~900Wh, or a bit less than 30c, so it would take about 600+ days (or 2 years) of this panel operating at almost ideal output for 6 hours a day with minimal losses and directly offsetting 150W of load (assuming no battery storage). For a full blown system and lower cost of electricity and additional things like batteries and inverters, you're looking at a much longer payback period.
That's why this portable panel is better for camping, and being able to generate bits of helpful electricity off grid.If you want to toy around with this regardless, I recommend looking for a battery generator that is able to
- operate like a UPS (pass through power when its fully charged while staying plugged in)
- Charge from solar and AC at the same time
- prefer using solar over AC when solar is available, to power devices that are plugged in to it.
I haven't looked too closely at what's on the market, but with the above criteria, you'd end up plugging what you want to power into the battery unit, and using AC power normally in a pass-through fashion when the battery is full, bypassing AC and using solar when the sun is shining, and having the benefit of battery backup for whatever's plugged in when power goes out.Our community has rated this post as helpful.
