As someone who just did a lot of research on this, TP-Link just tends to drop support for routers quickly. That's why I was just in the market for one… TP-Link stopped issuing any firmware updates for my router. It's not good to have a router that isn't receiving updates. ASUS is known to support theirs longer and there's actually a robust third party firmware scene as well.

I did research on routers in the Spring as I was buying and looked at this one. This has the routing performance of a sub $100 wifi 6 router, just with triband 6E included. It also lacks merlin support. Its wifi performance is no better than average. It's a good router, I would take it for $80-$100, but for $180, it seems like you could do better value-wise.

Someone mentioned the ubuiqiti dream router - it has a noisy fan that runs 24/7.

RT-AX3000 V2 is a better value if you need a cheap good asus router with merlin support. If you want a better wifi 6 option - rt ax86u pro and 88u pro are much better regarded than this and have merlin. Or you could look into wifi 7 options from netgear and asus. Although the hardware is good, TP link has security issues with its firmware.

Past comments have indicated that TP Link is poor at keeping up security patches and firmware updates. I don't own one.

Spent a week with an Asus BE9700 and could not get some of my Kasa devices to connect . Bought a TP Deco BE10000 and connected 29 devices to the IOT in 5 minutes.

Was always an ASUS fan. Bought like five of their routers over the years. Then got an AX6000 and within a year it crapped out in the weirdest way - everything connected flawlessly but once more than x bps was being transferred the bandwidth somehow dropped, along with most devices, to about 500k/sec. Then eventually froze. Got a tplink archer ax73 and it's been working flawlessly for two years now. I don't hate asus but I'm definitely a tplink convert - their security cams are excellent as well.

I got this router recently to replace a TUF AX6000, which replaced a GT-AC2900 and so far, so good.

I live in an dense condo building get a lot of wifi interference where there are no free bands in the 2.4GHz or 5GHz but using it for a month so far, it's been very stable in terms of speed and connection. The AX6000 it replaced was fine but would frequently struggle with interference.

The GT-AC2900 was utter dogsh*t. I got it March 2022 and it was fine it first and then after a year, the 2.4GHz started having problems which was resolved with weekly reboots but it just kept getting worse to the point where daily reboots wouldn't help with the 2.4GHz band dying.

Instead of a fancy Wi-Fi 6E tri-band router like this one, I'd go for a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router like the Netgear Nighthawk RS280S for just $10 more. Wi-Fi 7 routers usually have faster CPUs, more storage, and more RAM (routers are basically mini-computers—so this stuff matters!) to support Wi-Fi 7 features like Multi-Link Operation (MLO). Even without MLO, most Wi-Fi 7 routers exceed the 160MHz output found on Wi-Fi 6E models. In general, I've noticed better latency with Wi-Fi 7 routers compared to Wi-Fi 6E, even if the speed gain isn't huge. (Luckily, all my phones and laptops support MLO.) The only reason I'd consider ASUS is if I needed AiMesh—or maybe the 6 antennas, though most Wi-Fi 7 routers in this price range offer similar coverage and better device handling. TP-Link also has options in this range, but I've seen concerns about U.S. government security issues with TP-Link. I work in a field where that could lead to device bans, so it's something I have to consider.
