Kroger is offering 4x the normal amount of Fuel Points on the purchase of certain gift cards on their gift card portal. Math on this deal is as follows:
- 4 fuel points are earned for every $1 spent on gift cards, so the purchase of a participating $25 gift card will net you 100 fuel points.
- 100 fuel points convert into a 10¢ per gallon discount on your next fillup, with the discount maxing out on a 35-gallon fillup.
- You can accumulate a maximum of 1,000 fuel points for a $1 per gallon discount (when filling up at Kroger) or a maximum of 100 fuel points for a 10¢ per gallon discount (when filling up at participating Shell locations).
Amazon gift cards only earn 2x the normal fuel points back, but there are a lot of strong brands that are included in the promo such as eBay and Target.

If you drive something smaller and go for a 10-gallon fillup, this turns into a much less impressive $1 discount on every $25 gift card, which is 4% back.
A few weeks ago I took in all our change to the Coinstar machine. They no longer offer Amazon gc's as full value for the coins.

My guess is that they've realized that there are customers who pay for their orders entirely and repeatedly with gift cards, did some math, and decided that it's more profitable for those customers to pay for their orders with credit or debit, so they're doing what they can to discourage gift card incentives.
genius!
