Personal experience with metal ends: using the video cables with metal ends on PCs causes them to overheat because of the GPU's blower exhaust. My video blanks in/out constantly. Replaced with cheapo DP cable with plastic ends and all is good.

So when it says it's compatible with the Switch 2, does that mean you could use any USB-C webcam instead of that Nintendo one they're selling for $50 to use the GameChat features, or is there something unique about this particular one?

Not ANY, but MANY webcams work on switch 2.
Simple webcams, many up to 1080p work. I'm not sure if I've seen any 4k reported as working.
Complex webcams do not - if you need to install drivers, if it needs USB3 speeds, it won't likely work.

"The camera must not use the HID protocol."
"The camera must be configured for Isochronous transfer mode." (As opposed to Bulk, which can be more resource intensive.)
"The USB endpoint descriptors must not include unsupported low frame rate settings (below 30 fps)."

Well, if you read the description...it has sensors for both 1080p and 1440p. So it makes more sense to list both resolutions, because presumably it can record in either without having the associated crap that occurs from capturing video at a lower resolution than the sensor is designed to capture.
