I have the Orico 9848RU3 4bay with 4x 3T spinning disks. I have not had any issues with it as far as normal operations. It should be noted that I also haven't run into any failures yet. The dip switch setup doesn't need any software so that's a plus but there is no Linux support so that makes a cheap NAS build tricky. Don't lose the manual, I couldn't find it online. It also uses a lot of power, as much as my rig but that is probably the spinning disks. I would probably pull the trigger for this price if I didn't already have one.
so with a das you need to rely on the controller's technology? I can't access the disks or manage with mdadm (linux)? If that is true it is pretty scary.
Is there such a device as an external multi-drive that would expose the individual disks?

The one I have will do that by default out of the box. You have to go through the dip switch setting and a button to initialize the RAID on the controller for the array. After that it will present as a single volume. It kind of defeats the purpose and increases OS overhead. In theory, if a disk goes bad and it goes into a degraded state, the leds on the front should notify you. If you replace the disk the array should rebuild...in theory.
