The screen is nice, the storage and RAM are nice (not that you need 32GB RAM).

But to run really any modern game you have to put this thing in "performance mode" which uses 25 watt TDP and then you get 90 minutes battery life. And even then in practice it might not perform as well as the Steam Deck (source: RetrogameCorps) even with half the battery life.

The chip in this thing is miserable and it's false marketing to call it a Z2 chip when it's actually a Zen3+ chip while the Z1 Extreme is Zen 4. That's right: the "older" chip in the ROG Ally and original Legion Go is actually newer.

So, you know, personally I wouldn't get it. I would recommend Steam Deck OLED or ROG Ally.

The performance of the Z2 Go chip is pretty much the same as a Steam Deck. I would get a Steam Deck OLED over this handheld or save up for a deal on a Z1E handheld and put Steam OS on it.

Good deal, but og z1e ally and LeGo are better buy regardless when they're on sale for 450.

Currently, the original ROG Ally Z1 Extreme has the same sales price. This LeGO S variant has double the RAM and storage of that model, which is normally 16GB and 512GB respectively. The Ally's storage can be upgraded (up to 2TB) or supplemented with SD, but its RAM can not be changed.
This is currently the lowest price for this variant, so the $50 price difference would be worth it.

I agree with OP that, if you want Steam OS, it would make sense to sideload it onto this one. It's officially offered by Valve, and there's a bunch of written and video tutorials to make it less intimidating.

Personally I would not get this, you can get a Z1 Extreme handheld for less used or open box and it runs circles around this device.

The RetroGameCorps video you referenced suggest using Balanced mode for AAA games because Performance mode only gives you ~10% more fps and cuts battery life in half. In SteamOS with balanced mode you are getting around SteamDeck level performance at a 2.5 hr battery life. This is $150 cheaper than a SteamDeck Oled with 1TB.

Beefed up SteamDeck...

This is weaker than the original ROG Ally (Z1E) and LegionGo... which are two years old.

Well that's an interesting distinction and does change my opinion a little bit.

Still, the fact it required tuning in Performance mode to even match the Steam Deck means I'd avoid it.

ROG Ally's memory cannot be reliably increased with an sd card.

This thing runs all my games very well. I feel it's smoother than my legion go which is most likely due to that increase in RAM(very important when you can dedicate extra ram to the igpu).
I think it holds so much better than the steam deck, legion go, and Ally.

If you want to compare it to a steam deck then install steam os on it first.

Is it going to run comparably on benchmarks to a $1000 handheld or a gaming desktop? Hell no, but it isn't supposed to.

For everyone mentioning running it on highest power and it getting not much battery life... Why would you run it on full brightness with highest power draw? 25w to 15w is usually only 10-15% performance at most. Not worth it especially when most handheld games are not needing the extra power. Who buys a $500 handheld to play competitive new games at high resolution???

I dont that thats what was stated. The comment was to use balanced mode instead of performance mode with the intent of extending battery life. That reduces performance to the level of a steam deck.

If what guys are saying is true about this processor, which I do believe. I have to ask what is really the point of even making this handheld? It seems like it really had no business of being made.

The RetroGameCorps video shows that the performance in Cyberpunk 2077 even at 25 watts is below the Steam Deck performance though. So no, reducing to balanced mode would drop the performance below Steam Deck, not match it.

Windows is a big culprit.

ROG Ally can be upgraded to 4TB with a adapter, the Legion Go can be done the same with a new adapter that recently came out. (Both upgrades to single sided 2280 NVME)
