Like VegaTheChosen suggested, throwing a new OS is as simple as flashing an image to a new SD card, then swapping cards. You could even install a new OS (on the SD card) before the handheld ever arrived and change OS's within seconds (as fast as you can install an SD card) the moment you take the new unit out of the box...before ever powering it on. The SD card is functionally your device's 'hard drive.' The only real consideration is you just need to make sure the OS is compatible with the target device.

P.S. Even with the Miyoo, many people ditch the stock OS within seconds of unboxing them.

This is misleading as you can put a whole new OS on these fairly easy. And most people trash the SD card and replace it with a new one, which you could load a new OS on.

Such a shame the joystick is on top, I'd buy it in a second if it was a dpad first device like the R36S.
edit: this comment was about the R36H when it was first in this post.
That's exactly it! There's no need for joystick on top since most retro games uses d-pad.

These things are so awesome! I got into the hobby last September and have purchased about 15 of them to give as gifts to other dads trying to relive their glory days! I've got it down to a science now: open box, install screen protector, add analog thumb grip, take out piece of crap SD card and replace with one that has been imaged and cleaned up, put it back in box, get a 3-d hand grips attachment, and give a soft cover travel case.
The longest part (hours and hours!) of it was going through every single emulator folder and cleaning them up of unwanted/duplicate games.
Sadly, I think most recipients of my gifts play with it for a little while, then the appeal wears off and it becomes a paperweight Frown

Hello! Do you happen to have a google drive link with your clean emulator folder? Asking for a friend of a friend. Stick Out Tongue

I surely hope not! Tell those "friends" they should be sharing the joys of retro gaming with their kids! In my experience the kids are amazed at games with no ads, non pay-to-win, farm/grind-unlock, pay-to-customize games!

My kids love the experience of playing TMNT Arcade and (and other classic Beat 'em Ups) adding unlimited credits". (Dad you had to put quarters to play????)

Agree with all commentary to curate the SD card to trim down to <100 across all the systems. You can always load the others later. Otherwise it's very overwhelming

Nice deal. I have one but the screen is a bit too small for my liking.

I've only been in the retro market for a few months but followed it for a while (and tinkered with emulation on the Steam Deck ) however I find myself playing these games more often than modern ones. I love my Magicx MZ 28 because it can go anywhere but can be too small at times, want to see if a 3.5" device is my goldilocks for EDC. For my household use I have new (to me) Retroid Pocket 4 Pro that can handle the more demanding titles.

P.S. We can tell you truly know your stuff (and care) in the threads you participate in!
I'm very new to this and want to get my kids off theses ad based online games. Hoping you could help.

Does this come with all the retro games or do I need to find them myself somewhere?

Would you recommend the Magic MZ 28 over this one?

I'm in no way an expert...but I'll try to help.

This should come with lots and lots and lots of retro games, but it will likely have plenty of holes as well. The included games are in no way curated. For example, most of these systems will have 1000+ NES and SNES games alone but somehow lack that one game you want to play from your childhood Wink And they are not exaggerating with "15K Games" but that might include some duplicates, "hacked" games (modded in some way to create a fresh experience, new campaign, improved visuals, etc) Some IP's like Mario and Zelda will be missing due to the fact they go after these emulators more than other companies.

I love my Magicx MZ 28, but it is VERY small (easy to pocket though) I like that fact but others may not, also I am an average sized man 5'9". If my hands were any bigger it might be a challenge to play. If you have bad eyes is another consideration because of the small screen. The Magicx in theory would be more powerful but depending on the games you want to play it might not matter (anything below N64 or Dreamcast should be a wash). I don't own the R36S so cannot compare the two but I am personally leaning towards the R36H because that looks like a more comfortable formfactor being horizontal.

Adding games is super easy but also a ethical gray area if you don't own the original games. Also some of the ROM sites are sketchy.

Lol I don't. You probably already know, but i heard you can search something like "best r36s collection" or similar to find curated files.

I just remembered, but setting up all the controls for various systems and specific games took a very long time too. Luckily, copying a sd card image brings everything over!

How about a reccomendation for a unit that just plugs into HDMI and i can play on a TV?

SOmething that is hgihly configured, polished interface, and ready for roms.

Basically, I 1000% know how to do this stuff, I have multiple 5090 based workstations, i have an m4 mac (which i started setting retroarch up on lastt week but i've been busy)

I just want a plug and play solution that has all the conguration stuff done and is really optimized using the best emulators and with a nice interface that i can dump roms onto, plug controllers into, and just easily play games ... I want an out of the box easy experince that's set up and configured well so I dont' ahve to do it.

I can get the roms, but i'll also take the roms.

You're correct, these would be a downgrade in performance Smilie
If these handheld are android can they play android games? My kids are using $1k phones for Minecraft and it seems like overkill. But older phones seem to struggle with Minecraft. Would love a cheap phone game device for the kids. Phone service not needed.

Thanks WooHoo2You! Smilie

Your experience largely mirrors my own. I set up my Steam Deck to emulate everything up to PS2 and GameCube (alongside all of the Steam games I installed, of course); and yet I find myself reaching for these devices much more often than any other gaming hardware I own. There's just a certain level of convenience and comfort in knowing your handheld "only" ran you maybe $30 - $50 (but it can still do so much); whereas I find I hold my Steam Deck and Switch the same way I would a fragile carton of eggs, making it a bit tougher to enjoy while playing (because I worry about accidentally dropping them in the back of my mind) Big Grin

I truly hope the R36XX meets your needs as far as finding a decent one with a 3.5" display (those 2.8" screens can be tough for games with a lot of text, like RPGs).
I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I've been reading your answers and I was wondering if you could recommend a website to get started for somebody who's never worked with anything like this before but is familiar with loading software and workarounds needed to make different applications work together. Thanks in advance. I'm looking to load on older console games. Nothing new or graphics intense or anything like that.
