Don't think I've seen a better deal for this saw. 5Ah HO battery is the one to use with it, other M12 batteries perform less well.

I wanted the M18, but this is tempting. Anyone have this and would recommend?

I just purchased this (tool only) 2 weeks ago. This is a surprisingly robust tool with a lot of power behind it. I cannot comment how long the battery lasts/how many cuts it will make, but I did about 20 cuts the other day on 5-6 inch thick seasoned firewood and it handled it with no issues. There is no chain guard like other small saws on the market, and still takes a bit of upper body strength to handle this. This does not come with bar oil, so if you do not have any already, grab some while you are at the store. Overall I really like this and am glad I went with the 6 inch instead of 8 inch bar for my occasional usage.

I haven't tried this one but the 8 inch m18 kit with 2x 6ah HO batteries has been on clearance for 279 at HD. You might have one near you if you'd prefer m18. I bought that deal a couple weeks ago and it is fantastic. I tend to think saws benefit from the bigger battery packs but maybe 12v is good enough with these fancy new brushless motors - The m12 fuel circular saw has been impressing me lately. I bet this m12 hatchet is also good.

I don't have the M18 but I have had the M12 a few years.

Pros: It will run on any size battery for small jobs. For bigger ones best to just have the larger battery. It will cut through hard woods no problem. You can buy a replacement chain from "Oregon" brand on Amazon for about $10. It almost never binds up when using it how it's intended.

Cons: The safety switch is tiring after long sessions. The bar oil can leak out if not stored in certain positions. If you cut a bunch of live branches and just put it away the chain will surely bind up the next time you go to use it. It doesn't have enough power to simply spray some oil or solvent on there and bust through the grime. The chain tension can loosen after a while using it so if you start to see slack forming use the on board wrench to tighten. If it comes free plan to spend an annoying amount of time getting a dirty chain back onto the bar. I'm sure there is a less frustrating way to do it but it feels tedious every time for me.

All that said i'm sure most of these issues are possible on every saw and I would likely buy this product again (but would prefer a pole saw version depending on my tasks). It sure beats using a reciprocating saw for pruning, especially while cleaning up medium sized branches already on the ground.

If the chain tension is adjusted properly when cooled you don't compensate with a loosening chain by tightening when warm. It shouldn't come off and should remain in specs for a warm chain in use. If you tighten when warm then it is going to be too tight when it cools down and can cause damage

This is one where you have to manually oil the chain. I'd get the bigger one

good review - you talked me out of buying and stick to my m18 one handed hackzall. i know the hackzall wont be as efficient or better than what you reviewed but i hate maintenance you described. for my chainsaw i havent found a way to store it without leaking so i just drain the chain oil everytime - not ideal but better than cleaning up the shelf.

Is this a good deal for the batteries alone? And the tool as an extra i could use the batteries and the tool would be used here and there

No it's not. It has an oil reservoir just like a normal chainsaw.

You could probably sell this new-in-box locally for $120-150, so yeah, I'd say so.

I bought this a month ago tool only for the same price. It has an automatic oiler.

I bought this deal, this time through shopmyexchange to save $20 on tax vs my order with home depot a month ago... while also getting 2 of the 5 XO HO batteries (worth more than this deal price imho, I have a ton of M12 and these batteries are excellent!) and will return the tool only from my last order, thanks OP!

I've borrowed this from a family member many times, at this price I will finally get one for myself!

I love this thing, most common use case for me is chopping down lengths of firewood that are too long to fit in my firepit. It's quick, and I capture the chips generated for kindling to start the fire! Thanks.
