Yesterday there was a lot of discussion around a different canon model only working with oem cartridges that cost as much as the printer. Anyone know about this one?

I have this one. You can order generic toners and will work fine. This model takes the 054H cartridges and the 054. The H being higher performance/capacity.

not really a great deal..you can get the next generation (mf654cdw) for the same price new: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cano...Id=6535536
generic toners look to be about $10-20 more expensive though

My understanding is that and other newer models won't work with aftermarket toners and oem are hundreds of dollars.

I've had issues with the wireless on the mf641cdw which I believe has the same network card. Kept having to reset it, I sent it back. As far as non-canon toner. I had a 753 for a while and the ones not from canon didn't last as long and even leaked so be careful, the price is steep but they do last longer if they are original toner as much as I hate to pay that price.

I bought some random el-cheapo aftermarket cartridges when the OEM ones ran out. They worked fine for a few months but cyan is now splitting blue spots on the right side of the page. I might have to buy another aftermarket cyan and hope for improvement. The OEM cartidges cost a fortune. It's cheaper to buy another printer although not good for the environment.

the model linked has cheap aftermarket toners available now, as it's a year old (or more, i didn't look up exactly when it was released, but the model in this thread is discontinued) you are correct of course that oem are hundreds of dollars though, and obviously other people above haven't had great experiences on other (related) models.

$10-20 more for a SET of four toners, i guess i should have said, to me would be worth not getting a refurb, actually having a full 3-year warranty vs. 90 days, more features, etc.

edit: quick search, here's a well-rated set for the mf654cdw i linked, for $60 with coupon, and obviously there's many more with higher ratings and more ratings, with a quick search: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D91L7THQ/

I bought this Canon about 2 or 3 years ago and hate it. Generic cartridges work really well...but honestly when I look at it on my desk...I keep forgetting I only paid $185 and still feel ripped off...its just garbage and at least once a week have to remove all the cables and plug it back in and still can't update the firmware...so last week I decided to look for a AIO and then this crap pops up...JHC
