"Made in China" is part of this heuristic, but it's not China's fault - it's whoever is profiting off slashing that last penny of manufacturing and QC costs. Which is generally an American corporation that laid off their workforce, cancelled their pension plan, and gave their CEO a huge golden parachute post-1999, but I suppose it would be racist to not let Europe play along too. In any event, stamping carbon steel is not a huge technological hurdle, coming from the people who brought you the wok.
Someone on SD will always find an excuse to pop into a thread to whisper "...China" and it's almost never relevant, other than the fact that you're saving money.
