"Made in China" is part of this heuristic, but it's not China's fault - it's whoever is profiting off slashing that last penny of manufacturing and QC costs. Which is generally an American corporation that laid off their workforce, cancelled their pension plan, and gave their CEO a huge golden parachute post-1999, but I suppose it would be racist to not let Europe play along too. Jack Welch who?
In any event, stamping carbon steel is not a huge technological hurdle, coming from the people who brought you the wok.
Someone on SD will always find an excuse to pop into a thread to whisper "...China" and it's almost never relevant, other than the fact that you're saving money.
Edit: misspelling

If they show as much thought as you do, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, if they just say "made in China" with no additional explanation, no way.

As long as you're not letting it soak or really scrubbing it
I have a de buyer mineral B and these have been solid picks for the price. Not the exactly quality of the de buyer, but will last for many years.
I do have cast iron but I find carbon steel easier to handle and faster to heat up.
As we get older, I prefer the lighter weight of carbon steel vs. cast iron. I have a pretty decent set of Lodge cast iron pans and dutch ovens that I like, but feel they are just too heavy. I find myself reaching for the carbon steel frying pans and the carbon steel wok for most of my frying/searing now and when I see a good carbon steel pan on sale, I've been buying them. Plus we're using the portable induction cooktops and when we remodel the kitchen, we'll put in a Bosch built in induction cooktop, so all the pots and pans that we get now are all induction ready.
