Actually what happens is a fuse burns out to prevent the motor from burning out. I found the fuses before (not sure where anymore) and if you're handy you can replace them.

I've had it happen on two occasions, and i still have the dead ones but I can't find the fuses. If you're inclined, you can fix them..There's even a video or pictures of the repair somewhere (again, I don't remember where).

These are one of my most liked fans. The blades will never hurt anyone, they're great for hot summer nights when you can't stand a large fan blowing on you, and they're whisper quiet. Fantastic product, except for the mystery fuses....

PS - my first reaction is to buy a couple, but I already have three scattered around so for once I'm going to try an have a little dignity....

They work good for your office desk, soft blades, and looks simple enough to not be an "item worth stealing" for Less savory types.

These are great desk/office fans but if you are looking for anything more versatile to compare it to (think USB powered fan), you will be disappointed. The motor can also be burnt out VERY easily if the fan encounters resistance. One of mine was brand new and fell off of a bedside table onto a dog bed. Because the dog bed stopped the blades from spinning for a short period of time, the fan got very hot and no longer works at all.

These are cool little fans and the quiet, non vibrating nature of them makes them excellent for someone who wants some airflow from a fixed distance. Just don't expect it to circulate the air around a room and I think people will enjoy it.

The blades are fabric, makes it better to fold and stow. $50 retail is laughable

Caution: My Zippy worked okay for many years, but eventually got tipped over while running, so the fabric blade couldn't rotate, and I didn't notice for a long time, and it overheated and died. I noticed the smell first. It was really hot. Glad it didn't burn anything. So please make sure this doesn't happen to your Zippy, and don't leave it unattended for an extended time. Now I use a regular caged (USB) fan for my desk.

PS: The thermal fuse apparently didn't do its job on mine, because it was baking away (at least many hours, if not days) for a while until noticed the smell and slight hum and turned it off.

A fire waiting to happen, from a stalled uncaged fan.

I prefer caged fans to reduce fan motor stalls and overheating, such as this $6 UL listed Walmart Mainstays USB 4" metal fan:
