My 2-14TB Western Digital's just went belly up, and almost the exact same time. I assumed they were Seagate's, but nope, they were WD's after all. These helium sized drives CANNOT be recovered from, so I'm not so sure either brand is superior over the other these days, instead its a hard lesson to make sure you have good backups of your backups and files.

i too had 2 seagates externals die within weeks of each other, one was backup for the other. luckily i had most data still on smaller set of drives that that the i had consolidated to the seagates.

this was over 5 years ago... I thought I had heard seagate had improved either due to ownership of changes to the way they make their drives? as 26TB for $250 would be awesome to once again have a single drive to consolidate everything too.... this time making sure to keep original on various WD's.... but I don't want to waste $250 and the hassle

any chance or WD's coming down to this price range or have tariffs for now made that impossible?

Way back in time, I'd read that you never buy drives from the same batch code for just that reason. Especially for RAID since re-silvering often triggered another failure.

Easier said than done, but I would buy from different stores or months apart or even from different manufacturers and it somehow worked out.

I bought two of these last week when they were on sale to shuck and put in a 2-bay NAS for RAID 1. I was seeing speeds in the 230-260 MB/s range on the outer diameter pretty consistently. Temp wise, they run about 47-48C for me under load. My assumption is that since these are hermetically sealed (helium filled), they use the same hardware and components as ironwolfs/exos drives, but are binned due to "some" issue. I expect for light home use they are going to do just fine for years to come.Edit: I should also add, if you visit the Seagate website on your mobile device (and possibly incognito), you should be presented with a newsletter signup offer for an additional 10 percent off.
Here's the link for the bare Seagate BarraCuda 3.5" Hard Drive 24TB for $250.

Temping. I recently had 2-14TB hard drives fail. I have rarely had drives fail over the years, but these must have been a bad batch since they both failed, and almost around the same time. They are sitting amongst tons of drives ranging from 8TB-20TB. I was quick to point the blame thinking they were Seagate's, but they were actually Western Digital drives. For whatever reason, those particular drives ran much hotter than other drives, even though the cases look almost identical.

Historically, Seagate's have failed more than Western Digital's in my experience, but my failure rate has been low overall on all brands.
I like this idea. At the end of the day, how much excess fat to trim comes by automating old backups to be deleted when they're old and also mentally actually deciding the true amount of backups your really need. I feel some people over backup their stuff.

get some software that only backups certain folders rather than a whole drive clone. Use those folders as a dedicated folder structure to keep things you would be absolutely devastated to lose and keep it strict.

FWIW, it didn't show up for me until I clicked on their Products link (https://www.seagate.com/products/) from their homepage (https://www.seagate.com/).
Thanks for the 10% off tip!

Thanks for the tip, that 10% works great. I tried from my phone and then two different browsers on my desktop PC before I was offered the 10% discount - I suspect searching for Seagate in Google then clicking one of their sponsored ads that appear in a row at the top of search results expedited that.

If someone doesn't want to de-case these they can get 24TB bare drives for the same price. Specifically. ST24000DM001
The 24tb bare drive seems to also have a 2 yr warranty vs 1yr on the external. Thanks

I have them setup in NAS, these are bit noisy compared to exos drives I had from server parts deal. It could bother few who put their NAS on their work desks. These drives are great overall, although I couldn't reach the speeds mentioned by other user. Mine consistently runs around 150-180 on a 2.5GBe NIC. They're great (not as great as Exos, though), and I haven't encountered any errors or failures in the past six months.I suppose it would be a suitable choice for a beginner who is on a budget to build a home NAS. I recommend purchasing two for RAID1 redundancy.
Do you know if you got the Exos version or Barracuda? I recently bought the 18TB for $220 and it was EXOS and I want some advise on whether I should return the 18TB and get the 26TB for $30 more with the hopes of also getting an Exos.

This deal has been around for a least a month. Reddit is full of shucked drive photos. For this model/size they have been 100% Barracuda.

Quick Qestion: I'm in florida and the month of august is no state tax.

Does seagate automatically take off the sales tax for florida.
