ChatGPT:

Here's the bottom line, based solely on 2025 data from the most reputable independent labs—AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives, plus real-world usage trends:
Top 3 Recommendations (Including Built-in Defender)

1. Microsoft Defender Antivirus (built into Windows 11)

AV-TEST consistently yields top results: In April and June 2025, Microsoft Defender scored the highest ("Top Product") across Protection, Performance, and Usability, with perfect scores (6/6 each) AV-Comparatives+14AV-TEST+14AV-Comparatives+14.
AV-Comparatives also includes Defender among products that achieved the highest awards in their real-world protection tests (February–May 2025), with a 99.1% protection rate—only slightly behind leaders at 99.8% AV-Comparatives+1.
Bottom Line: Defender delivers elite protection with zero cost and minimal impact—making it the easiest and best baseline antivirus for Windows 11.
2. Bitdefender Total Security

AV-TEST's April 2025 Windows 11 test named Bitdefender among the few "Top Products" with perfect scores in Protection, Performance, and Usability AV-Comparatives+15AV-TEST+15AV-TEST+15.
AV-Comparatives' Real-World Protection test placed Bitdefender at the very top with a 99.8% protection rate, the highest of all competitors AV-Comparatives+1.
Bottom Line: Bitdefender is a powerhouse—exceptional defense, superb real-world results, and strong performance metrics.
3. ESET Security

AV-TEST certified ESET as a "Top Product" in April 2025 for Windows 11, again scoring highly across protection, performance, and usability AV-Comparatives+11AV-TEST+11AV-TEST+11.
In AV-Comparatives, ESET achieved a 99.1% protection rate in real-world testing (all around Advanced+ award level) AV-Comparatives+3AV-Comparatives+3AV-Comparatives+3.
Additionally, ESET remains one of the most widely used security products—even more so in North America—behind only Microsoft and Bitdefender in usage share AV-Comparatives.
Bottom Line: ESET offers excellent protection, a lighter performance impact, and widespread trust—making it a stellar choice for reliability and efficiency.
Final Takeaway

Stick with Microsoft Defender—it's free, built-in, and top-tier.
Want maximum protection? Bitdefender edges ahead across all safety metrics.
Prefer smooth performance with expert detection? ESET hits that sweet spot.

I've tried all the anti virus brands, some were better than others. Id get anywhere from 2-3 viruses a year.

Maybe cyber security has just gotten better and Microsoft is blocking it all and I'm giving undue credit but I've used bitdefender for the past 7+ years and in that time, not one single virus.. not one.

I've been very impressed and have no need to try any other service. It does occasionally not play friendly with other software. For instance it refuses to believe stamps.com software is not a virus and you have to make an exception in settings.

Im starting to hate the Bitdefender free version, for some reason every few minutes the typical notification pops up "Suspicious connection blocked", i think its something with the website ads. The only way to turn off notification is to buy premium version and create a profile in settings to remove this notification.

Does anyone know if this is stackable? For example, if I buy 2 of these, will it stack to 4 years?

You cannot
Can You Stack Bitdefender Licenses?
You cannot stack Bitdefender licenses on a device. Instead, you need to move the device to a new Bitdefender plan or renew the existing plan before the expiration date. To move a device, activate the new plan in Bitdefender Central.

Good to know. Heard similar comments, too many notifications or too many ads, for most free versions.

For others, note this is not the free version.

ChatGPT is correct that ESET and BitDefender are 2 of the very best AV products. I move most of my clients to one of these. BitDefender specifically has excellent randsomware protection.

With over 2 decades as an IT Manager and consultant, please believe me when I tell you that the majority of hundreds of infected PC's I've seen had only Defender. Plus Defender only covers Windows for free. Android is now the most targeted OS. Plus ideally you should protect your Mac, Linux, and iOS devices.

One basic fact that ChatGPT "forgot" to mention is that Defender uses the built-in Windows firewall, which is super user-friendly but crap otherwise. The others use their own firewalls, which makes a night and day difference.

Btw, this cost per device is cheaper than the highest volume discount that exists. $3 / device / year!

TLDR; Get yourself some AV protection on at least your Windows and Android systems.
This is pretty affordable.
And even if you're one of those folks that doesn't need protection, get it for your parents. They might not be as malware savvy as you.

This is a good price if you need it. With how good Windows defender is these days, I don't really feel like I need this anymore. Though I have this program running on one laptop since I bought a long time ago a lifetime license.

Your Right. No Stack. Last time it expired it was strange that way. Kind of pissed me off.- BE Carful not to register this license until the current license expires. Its stupid and starts your subscription the day you register. Process is: Add the new license and then reinstall on each device

Good Assessment. I just don't trust Microsoft anymore. It used to be They were excellent.. lately with all the idiot unsecure features like Recall, all the advertising evasion of privacy, Buggy My Phone app, suppressing Setting dialog boxes, and in general making life more difficult. Again I just dont trust them. I have been using Bitdefender now for years

Does malwarebytes premium expire if not activated by a certain date? My current one is good until June 2026 so have no need for it now but I'd like to buy and hold on to it if it won't expire by then..
