I got a WD sn850x 2TB around that time for $79 after PayPal cash back. These SSDs should be way cheaper, but aren't unfortunately.

That pricing is due to over supply during post covid. On to of that, companies such as Micron, Samsung or Hynix are shifting supply line to AI related parts, such as HBM, since it has higher demand/higher margin. Within the next couple years, we will not see a drastic price drop like what we experienced two years ago.

Pretty sure the 980 pros hit those low prices in November/December 2024 at Bestbuy and probably Amazon before they began to be clearanced out. Could have hit near giveaway prices via Staples BM as well.

Is this that much better than the evo plus for $65? A ~10% increase in theoretical write speed seems like not that big a difference, or am I missing other factors?

Evo Plus doesn't have DRAM.

Highly recommend avoiding 1TB drives at this point, just go for 2TB minimum, and not just for the additional storage space.

I'm even using a 2TB just for my boot drive these days. They are about the same price, and you get several advantages on top of the extra storage.

Care to elaborate? Are you referring to longevity/MTBF based on total write cycles?
