Professional engineering brands that care about proper implementation include Plugable, OWC, Vantec, UGreen, in that order. They make mistakes sometimes but most of their stuff are solid. Really any brand is better that ORICO. Buy Sabrent or UGreen if you need cheap stuff.
For example, Sabrent has aluminum enclosure for $10. It's twice as expensive as this deal, yes, but it's an actual product meant to keep your hard drive from crashing and disconnecting as you write and read data from it and heat up the drive.

There was a time when that hard drive cable alone costed more than $5.
I have one and I've only ever used it on my power hub so that might be a case, because it's worked perfectly for me

Old ORICO products were good. However, in recent years, ORICO has sacrificed quality to reduce production costs. The result is cheap-looking designs, lower quality, and various issues. In the past, they used to use a lot of aluminum shells, but nowadays, they opt for cheap plastic shells. Especially when transferring or copying data, it's common to lose files or experience file corruption, even powered USB hubs.

Vendor ID: 0x152d (JMicron Technology Corp.)
Version: 2.04

while the USB 3.1 variant might use the Via Labs VL716 chipset.
If someone could please confirm that this is still the case in 2025, that would be great. It is probably a good idea to update the firmware to the latest available version from station drivers which contains stability fixes:
JMicron JMS578 Sata USB 3.0 Controller Firmware Version 00.05.00.14

For Linux users, you might find this to be useful as well: https://github.com/russinnes/jMic...ware-Linux
Alternatively, if you don't want to upgrade the firmware, AsMedia ASM235CM-based adapters seem to generally have better reviews (higher speed and better stability out of the box).
Note that these adapters are designed for 2.5" laptop SATA drives, they probably don't have the 12 volt lines required to operate the more power-hungry 3.5" desktop SATA drives.
