Yes and no. Installed directly on a wall, they mostly dampen mid to upper frequencies, but don't really impact bass response (which is often what needs the most help). But if you screw some furring strips to the wall and then attach the panels to those, that gives you an air gap to decouple them from the wall, which improves their performance a lot. If you want to take it even further, you can put a layer of rockwool in the space behind the panels.

If anyone is interested in this and is reasonably handy (or even simply willing to try, nothing is complex), then look into some DIY acoustic panels. They're essentially all made from rockwool and can be easily customized. The simplest way is to frame out a rectangle, cut the rockwool to fit, wrap the whole thing in whatever aesthetic you want (could likely attach thin strips of wood to the frame to reproduce this aesthetic), and then hang as you would a picture.

They are available at HomeDepot but we didn't like the quality and our local costco doesn't carry Artika branded so we could compare.

Putting wood strips on the front would negate a lot of the dampening, for the record.

I would disagree, these alone will do nothing for mid frequencies, maybe very high ones. The decoupling you mentioned won't do much either without rockwood. In general at the very least it would have to be 4"-5" thick to make a meaningful difference.You are correct that bass(low) frequencies are thee 1st thing to address.If you don't do that, mid/high frequencies won't be very relevant.

That's a broad and complicated question. In general you need to find out what your environment needs & where. The most impactful by far is low(bass) frequency. In general the lower the frequency the thicker/denser porous material.As mentioned putting solid wood planks/panels kinda defeats the purpose. If you want to try on your own. I would suggest starting with your 1st reflection points and or corner bass traps. Dirac's new ART RC will be interesting.It's supposed to be an alternative/reprieve to all this. The current Denon & Marantz units that offer Dirac will soon get offered ART! When done properly optimizing your room environment is one of thee best things you can do to improving your sound quality in my experience.

I just did this except I just used a wood frame cut some moving blankets to size sewed them together and wrapped front in felt. Was pretty easy and def can tell a difference. I was going to use rockwool, but say a video of someone testing sound with just cut up towels and performed very well. So figured I'd used materials I had outside of the 1x4's.
