My wife would use her laptop for browsing, video calls and multitasking/possible WFH. While she'd prefer a 16-inch screen, she's ok with a 14-inch screen. Micro Center seems to currently have the best deals for Macbook Pros and we're open to getting whichever provides the best value proposition. We can also wait to purchase if a better deal becomes available there or elsewhere.

We're open to getting a better machine if it has longevity or other advantages that make the value proposition more worth it. But does it? 2 premium & 2 base options, with most expensive (M3 Pro Max, ironically) listed first:

Premium Option #1:

Was $4,679.99
Save $1,609.45
Current price: $3,070.54

Key Features
Apple M3 Max 16-Core Chip
64GB Unified Memory
Apple M3 Max Chip 40-Core GPU
4TB SSD
16.2" Liquid Retina XDR Display
Wireless LAN WiFi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.3
macOS
SDXC Memory Card Reader

Premium Option #2:

Was $3,999.99
Save $1,084.00
Current price: $2,915.99

Key Features
Apple M4 Max 16-Core Chip
48GB Unified Memory
Apple M4 Max Chip 40-Core GPU
1TB SSD
16.2" Liquid Retina XDR Display
Wireless LAN WiFi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.3
macOS
SDXC Memory Card Reader

Base Option #1:

Was $1,599.99
Save $350.00
Current price: $1,249.99

Apple M4 10-Core Chip
16GB Unified Memory
Apple M4 Chip 10-Core GPU
512GB SSD
14.2" Liquid Retina XDR Display
Wireless LAN WiFi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.3
macOS
SDXC Memory Card Reader

Base Option #2:

Was $1,229.99
Save $333.33
Current price: $896.66

Key Features
Apple M3 8-Core Chip
8GB Unified RAM
Apple M3 Chip 10-Core GPU
512GB SSD
14.2" Liquid Retina XDR Display
Wireless LAN WiFi 6E (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.3
macOS
SDXC Memory Card Reader

It's hard to figure out which machine to get especially not understanding the dropoff from M3 to M4 and also what the longevity will be for the specs of each option above. If any of you have any insights on the best value props from the above, we thank you!

It sounds like your wife is not a power user, so you will likely be very very happy with lower specs, though to future proof get >= 16GB RAM. For most people who aren't power users, a 15" Macbook Air is ideal since it's super light and easily carryable. The 16" is far more bulky and heavy, may not fit on airplane traytables, etc. If I were you, I'd try the models in-store. Close the 16" and lift it one-handed (super heavy), then compare with the Air (easy!).

The difference between M3 and M4 is ~+20% faster. However, your wife likely won't notice unless she uses CPU/GPU-heavy apps, and typical business users do not. Currently, Micro Center has 15% off Macbook Air, and if you get an open box an additional >=10%, so you could get a great deal right now.
