You can get the "kit", or you can also just get one of these:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08F4ZDDMG

The problem with the Flame King "kit" is that it has a pin in the adapter, and a hole in the Flame King that it mates to. So that the Flame King "kit" can only refill a Flame King tank. The pin won't let you use the refill kit on a non-Flame King tank.

If you get this generic hose, it works on both the Flame King refillable tank as well as a regular Coleman type disposable tank. Make sure you get a generic one with a hose, it is much easier to refill with the hose type compared to ones that don't have the hose. This is the one I use to refill my Flame King tanks, also it has nice leak free gasketed Brass bottle caps that are nicer than the plastic ones the Flame Kings come with.

Even better deal, the Mr. Heater Fuel Kegs can be ordered with a subscription for more of a discount. I got an additional 10% off on the $15.18 price. Flame King doesn't offer the subscription option. I bought 6 more. California trying to kill the old one-use tanks so this is decent way to switch over.

Maybe I'm naive, but why do you keep emphasizing the word LEGALLY?

THe regular green tanks can legally be refilled. The only governing body is Federal DOT who says you can't fill a tank and then transport it. I guess with these, you can be sure that you won't somehow get caught with a refilled tank in your car.

Stupid.

I have too many of the regular 1lb that I've refilled, but this price is also available at walmart, home depot, etc right now.

Sounds like the Me Heater is the way to go. But you have to buy the refill kit separately? That's another $30.

The Mr. Heater tanks are more convenient to fill (no alan key required). That said their QC is not the best. My tank the valve stem gasket and gasket holder/stopper would come out on every other use (I fixed that with a drop of glue spread around the perimeter of the gasket stopper). I haven't seen other users report that issue (so its possible I got really unlucky), but there's a lot of reviews with visible rust due to poor paint application. If these weren't half the in-store price I'd recommend getting one in store where you can visibly inspect before purchasing.

Still at this price I think I'll roll the dice on an extra tank.

Note: You do need a special adapter to properly fill both of these which has a pin not present on the refill adapters for the disposable tanks. You can buy the name brand "fill kit" or there are knockoff adapters for much cheaper that work just as well.

Curious if the Mr Heater version can be filled with an existing fill valve used for the green disposable tanks. The description says you have to use a special fill kit. Are all fill connections the same?

Edit: looks like RealDealForReal answered me just above.

I have 3 of these and I am happy with them. You also need the Flame King Refill kit to make it work. From what I read, the one use bottles will eventually crack when refilled. I don't really know. This system does work well. My only complaint is there is a stupid little hex key to keep up with. I saw another brand that did not need the hex key, but I don't see it this morning. The reason I bought these is the thought of a rupturing in a car full of people was not worth the risk. Peace of mind.

These are also designed to refill, so you can purge tank and completely fill it (without playing freezer tricks) and not worry about a one time use valve leaking

Now if only they have the refillable 4oz tanks for backpacking.

[edit] It's more about an isobutane converter that would stand well with the little backpacking stoves. Most of the adapters are made for the disposable containers.

like this GSI one [rei.com]

Ignik's 4 lbs propane tank is $57 (25% off) so same price as 4 of these. You'd need hoses to run the same gear, but you also don't need the filling kit. I have a splitter so I can run my stove and grill off the same tank.
