Is there a reason this is objectively better than the similar 8bitdo ultimate 2C [amazon.com] or the PowerA controllers [amazon.com]that have been in the $28-$35 range for certain designs? Not hating on this deal as it is a significant discount from retail for the Hori and looks like a unique licensed skin, just genuinely asking if there is a technical/features reason to pay up a bit for the Hori vs those as seemingly reputable and comparable options.

This model lacks programmable buttons, advanced rumble, hall effect triggers. You pay for the fancy skin here and typical quality of Hori stuff. I considered this but 40 is still quite a bit. I haven't seen the Wireless Horipad in any of the top low latency lists for switch controllers. Iirc the Switch one that shows up there routinely is the branded Switch pro controller. A lot of specific games (especially competitive ones) have individual mean low latency lists you can lookup in regard to controller performance.
