I was in Taiwan for 3 weeks in April. Too bad the east side suffered severe destruction during last year earthquake. The locals told me it will be at least another 4-5 years before they finish the repairs.

If you are in Kaohsiung, take the ferry to Penghu for a few days and take a few day tours to nearby islands. We stayed at Fong Kuo Hotel and there is a restaurant next door with great affordable seafood. We had a big live seafood meal for two for a little over $40. We came back the next night unfortunately they were full until close

Quite a good deal, especially if your designation is kaohsiung to begin with. If it's your first time to Taiwan, it may be best to fly to Taipei instead as you can pretty much get around with English. The transit system is also more established comparing to kaohsiung. Think of Taipei as Tokyo, and kaohsiung as Osaka if that makes sense.

I just literally landed 3 hours ago back home in Philly after a 2+ weeks trip to and from Taiwan (based starting and returning to travel around Asia). It was the cheapest flight to Asia by at least $1000 for a family of 4 compared to anywhere else. 5 hours from PHL to SFO, 12 hours from SFO to TPE and United was absolutely excellent all 4 legs of the roundtrip. Every flight was on time. Food was decent for airplane food. Wife is a Celiac and the gluten free meals were great. Alcohol was free. Service was great. Seats were comfortable despite cheapest economy class and entertainment setup was perfect for such a long trip. Individual screens with BT connection for your BT headset on 3 of the 4 flights. Free checked bag per person, up to 50lbs. I've flown countless of times and haven't been this impressed in awhile!

Did you have to pay extra to be seated together with your family?

This is a great question! When we first booked, they assigned us random separate seats even though we were a family. We didn't want to pay extra, but figured they would at least put us together. The seats were also next to the toilets. My wife called them and asked them to put us together since we're a family, didn't mention the toilets but they put us together for all 4 legs several rows up. Don't pay extra, call them if the automatic seat assignments don't work to your liking. Our kids are 10 and 12, for reference.

I'd also check to avoid seats in front of exit rows. Typically, those seats can't be reclined.

Did you buy the legal insurance for help in the event of being refused re-admission to the U.S.?
