I use it for a humidifier, ice maker and a water cooled bed topper. Beats cleaning them all of hard water deposits.

The "price to compare" the utility companies provide is just the rate for consumption. They also have a delivery rate for all the infrastructure. All in, my rate is about 33 cents per kWh.
Let me guess, you are in PA too?

Yup. My company claims power is $0.09, but somehow costs me $0.27 after all of the fees and charges and offsets and other made-up costs are added in.

South Jersey here, paying $.33. The state shutdown Oyster Creek nuclear plant and now we have to buy it from other states.

I know this comes with a charcoal filter. Do folks just run theirs without it and deal with the mineral deposits using vinegar? I don't want to buy more filters.

Honestly, depending where you live, probably cheaper buying RO water from a local place. It's 70-80 cents a gallon here. To make distilled water with this thing, you'd burn about 2.6 kWh per gallon, and at a cost of 30+ cents per kWh, plus the cost of the machine itself...just doesn't make sense.
where do you live that the kWh rate is so high? I thought my state was high at 13 cents
My rate is 50+ cents per kwh off peak. 60+ on peak. Smh

...is this also a still? ๐Ÿค”

running this thing for 3.5 hours at 750W for a gallon of distilled water seems like more effort than buying it. but ymmv ๐Ÿ‘
I suppose it depends on how much you will use it. Winter time I have humidifiers running in five bedrooms and we use distilled water in each. We put it up on the way out in the morning and it shuts itself off. We usually go strong with making "batches" for a day or two which lasts a bit and store it in empty water bottles.
Actually, it also depends on the warranty and how long the product is expected to last. I don't see any warranty details listed here. So using a Weibull distribution model, I'd estimate a lifespan of about 6โ€“8 years, assuming usage of 2 gallons per week. However, since this is an off-brand product from China, I'd assume it fails around 20%(the worst case) into its expected lifecycle. That would be roughly 1.4 years (20% of 7 years) with estimated $0.85/gal, which still comes out more cost-effective than paying $1.25 per gallon plus the recycling fee in California. I used to work on energy efficiency standards before our department was abolished by DOGE, and this is a simplified version how we calculate lifecycle cost for DOE.

ComEd/Illinois paying full unit cost of ~0.64ยข/kWh, electricity providers find it more feasible to load the added infrastructure cost of all those high energy data centers/bitcoin mining operations across all users.
Add that to all the corruption/ costs/Mike Madigan legacy sunk costs and you end up paying through the nose and up the azz..

What rate do you value your time at? All of that time wasted dinkydooing around with brewing up distilled water to save a grand total of $36. Just run tap water in your legion of humidifiers, you crested gecko or whatever you are, and just replace your humidifiers slightly sooner when they poop out from mineral buildup as opposed to pooping out from being Chinesium throwaway-grade consumer waste built to last for 6 years under optimal conditions. Imagine the things you could have done with your life had you not spent 5 hours a week decocting empty water.
Tap water? Perhaps I'm listening wrong, but I believe part of the issue here is so that you don't pump the crap in your water into the air as well.

It's not only about the deposits but also about what you breathe.

I've actually done this out of curiosity. I had a bunch of homemade wine that I made with Oz Tops (or E-Z Caps), and used it as my mash. I guess I was making grappa rather than corn whiskey. The end result was 140 or 150 proof, but even diluted to 90 proof, still very harsh. There are "impurities" that make it taste bad. I even tried using a ZeroWater filter (ruined that) and it made it a little better, but still not as good as the cheapest commercial vodka. I gained new respect for cheap vodka, it's superior to just about any "moonshine". I even dumped the heads and tails, but again, very harsh results. It was a lot of fun though and super easy with the distiller.

In case you want to try it yourself, the distiller I used is just like the one here with a digital temperature control which allows you to adjust the temperature to just get the alcohol https://www.amazon.com/VEVOR-Wate...r_1_4_sspa

Speaking of the homemade wine I used as a base. A long, long, time ago, probably 20 years ago I found this Australian company https://web.acsalaska.net/~terracore/test.html (no longer in business as far as I know) that sold what they called Oztops. They sold a kit of 2L plastic caps that allowed you to make superior homemade sparkling wine in a 2L bottle. No cooking or fancy equipment. The caps have a hole in the center and a gasket with a small slit and pinhole to let CO2 escape. They're brilliant as they allow you to make shockingly good wine and cider from the juice of your choice and a cup of sugar. I think the Australian company is gone, but there's an American company that copied the idea and have been selling their version ever since. https://web.acsalaska.net/~terracore/homebrew/ Oztops were a little better than E-Z Caps, but you can still buy an E-Z caps and they work fine. It's the easiest and best homemade sparkling wine you'll ever make.
I've tried making my own caps, but I didn't have the same success as I did with Oztops and E-Z Caps. The gasket is the hardest thing to perfect. You need to make a small slit and a pinprick hold in the center. I already had plenty of caps, so I gave up trying, but if you're handy you can probably figure it out.

The filter shouldn't affect deposits - those will be in the container and associated plumbing. I'd guess the filter is to add another level of "clean" to the water, and possibly catch any scale that might flow through (which it shouldn't if it's designed well).

I do know that for me the filters were a red flag, as there's no mention on that page of any replacements for sale, so no idea what they might cost or how long they might last. Or even if the machine *can* be run without the filter. Shame as both my wife and I use CPAPs and it'd be nice to create my own distilled water for them.
